On May 20, 2012, a strong earthquake hit the Emilia Romagna region in the area north of Bologna, causing several deaths and massive damage to ancient buildings in several towns. Another earthquake hit Emilia today (40 kilometers north of Bologna and 60 kilometers east of Parma) in the area just north of Modena, with reports of 15 deaths and more damage in the already affected towns and resulting in train cancellations and slow downs. It was also felt in Milan, where schools were evacuated, and in Venice, where it toppled a statue.
