New Zealand is a spectacular country to go on a walking holiday, and if you are planning to arrange a guided walk then there cannot be many other places on earth that offer such stunning surroundings.
The main choice of many visitors arriving on a New Zealand walking holiday is which island to explore, so here are some of the highlights from the North Island to help you decide whether you want to make this your primary destination.
Tongariro Crossing
Tongariro Crossing is located in Tongariro National Park, which was the first national park in New Zealand. It is over 80,000 hectares in size, meaning there is plenty of space to explore when you arrive on your New Zealand walking holiday. The Tongariro Trek is one of the most exciting treks to be found anywhere in the country, and the stunning volcanic plateau is one of the standout features to be found here. If you are ready for some serious walking then this is a great option.
Lake Waikaremoana
Lake Waikaremoana is a stunning body of water and the views in this area are absolutely amazing. Walkers heading here often take on the four-day Great Walk Track, which takes them through rainforests where they may be lucky enough to spot a kiwi. The track is nearly 50 kilometres long, so it is a great way to spend a few days on your New Zealand walking holiday.
Egmont National Park
At over 33,000 hectares in size, Egmont National Park on the western coast is one of the best national parks in the country. Here you will find Taranaki volcano, also known as Mount Egmont, which at 2,518 metres can be seen from far and wide. This mountain makes for an excellent climb if you fancy going up to the summit, and the route is comprised of forests, waterfalls and ice. The view from the top is spectacular and definitely makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Whirinaki Forest Park
The native timber forests of Whirinaki Forest Park are now quite rare so you will be getting a real treat when you visit this part of the country. The area covers 60,000 hectares, and there are some excellent walking opportunities on offer. Some trees in the park are over 1,000 years old, and there is also an incredible variety of birdlife and rare plant species to discover. It is also home to the Ngai Whare tribe who have lived here for hundreds of years.
Explore the North Island
When you start to think about planning your New Zealand walking holiday, consider all of the highlights above when making your decision. The South Island is also beautiful, but if any of the above areas sound particularly interesting to you then you may want to head to the North Island first to start the adventure of a lifetime.
