The Whale Guide for Whale Watching Tours

A budding ornithologist wouldn't be caught out sans his field guide. Without an aid to the identification of different species, his diary entries would simply say, "Today I saw a yellow bird and a red one." Not so intriguing when one is trying to find as many species as possible. The same holds true for those venturing out on their first whale watching expedition. You'll be just as excited when you see your first blow or your first flukes out of the water, but wouldn't you rather be one of the people at the table who can articulately discuss which species you saw today? Use the following tips as a "starter guide" on species identification.

Let's start with the biggest animal on Earth (and perhaps the biggest animal that EVER lived on Earth), the blue whale. The first indicator is size. An adult blue can reach a length of nearly 30 meters, far longer than any other species. Next, look for the size of the spray when the whale "blows", or exhales air while surfacing. In keeping with a massive set of lungs, the blue whale's blow is huge, often extending up to 6 meters above waterline. Finally, look for the coloration. The sides and back of this whale will have a blue-gray color, which gives the proud beast its name.

If the location of your whale watching is more likely to host humpback whales, keep an eye peeled for a shorter and rounder blow, followed by the appearance of a huge black body. While they're smaller than the blue whales, humpbacks can still reach more than 15 meters in length. As the animal dives, look for a roughly butterfly-shaped tail with white undersides. The pectoral fin or "flipper" of a humpback whale is quite long, with a rough and bumpy underside. This flipper is often exposed during diving, and the tail flukes are almost always seen as the animal submerges. The namesake hump on the whale's back, with a small dorsal fin, is the last clue for this species.

Identifying an orca, or killer whale, is perhaps the easiest of all the whales. Look for a sleek black body with white patches near the eyes and a white belly. The tall, upright dorsal fin is an easy clue as well. While fluking is not a typical orca behavior, their habit of bringing most of the body out of the water while surfacing can be spectacular. Expect lengths up to about 10 meters.

All whale species have their signature characteristics, and with experience and research (and perhaps a good set of binoculars!) you'll become an authority on whale identification in no time and it won't matter where you take your next whale watching cruise, you'll be equipped wherever in the globe you are.

Adventures in Europe: Train Holidays

For people who hate the rush and chaos of long-distance travel, especially through Europe, train holidays offer a restful and glamorous means of seeing the European countryside. When travelling in Europe, train holidays offer an experience that simply cannot be matched by any other form of travel.

Modern railways offer all the excitement and adventure along with all the comforts of home as you travel through Europe. Train holidays allow you to catch up on your reading or letter writing on soft comfortable armchairs, or watch the passing scenery through large picture windows. Slumber peacefully during the night and take refreshing naps during the day in deluxe sleeping cars with convertible beds and equipped with a wardrobe, air-conditioning, and en suite toilet/shower. Enjoy delicious regional cuisine in the dining car, or make new friends as you relax and have a drink in the lounge car. Some railways even offer live entertainment in the form of a piano bar! Best of all, you will get to see a plethora of the attractions of Europe. Train holidays are truly the best way to see the countryside. Listed below are some of the cities and towns that you can explore at leisure when you travel by rail.

Kecskemét

Kecskemet, which lies approximately 50 miles south of Budapest, is known as the centre of the Great Hungarian Plain. The name of the city stems from the Hungarian word kecske, meaning 'goat', likely because it was first settled by goat herders over a millennium ago. Kecskemet is known for its fruit products, including its famous barackpalinka, or apricot brandy. The city is home to many art nouveau buildings, churches and historical monuments, including the magnificent City Hall, which is considered to have launched the country's National Romanticism Movement.

Sighiayoara and Braeov

Sighiayoara and Braeov will be particularly interesting to horror fans, as Sighiayoara is whispered to be the birthplace of Vlad Tepes [aka Dracula], while Bran Castle, near Braeov, is known as Dracula's Castle. Sighiayoara is considered the most beautiful and well-preserved inhabited citadel in Eastern Europe, featuring authentic medieval architecture in the form of burgher houses and magnificent churches. Sighiayoara holds a medieval festival in the citadel every July, and the city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, travelling to Braeov provides a great view of the Carpathian Mountains. Aside from being an authentic medieval town, Braeov is also a famous resort town and has been named as the host of the 2015 Winter Youth Olympics.

Kazanlak

The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is probably its most famous attraction. Discovered in 1944, this mausoleum of a Thracian family dates from the Hellenistic period and is said to be the masterpiece of a single artist-architect. According to UNESCO, who declared it a World Heritage Site, it is 'a masterpiece of the Thracian creative spirit'. This monument is the only one of its kind anywhere in the world, so an exact replica was built to preserve the glorious frescos and the original condition of the structure. Kazanlak is also the part of Bulgaria's Valley of Roses. Rose oil is one of its major products, and its rose gardens are said to be the largest in the world. The Rose Festival, held every June to coincide with the season when the Kazanlak Rose is in bloom, is an international event attended by thousands of tourists.

Prehistoric Age in Chinese History

The prehistoric age is composed of the Paleolithic age and the Neolithic Age in Chinese history. The recent archaeological findings show that earliest australopithecines lived in South China about 4,500,000 years ago, and the Homo erectus set feet on China from 2,240,000 to 25,000 years ago, including Little Dwarfs, Yuanmou Men, Lantian Men, Nanjing Men and Beijing Men, and it's the earliest track of hominids ever known.

The prehistoric culture of China had gone through four phases on the whole, which are the early & middle period of the Paleolithic Age (represented by Homo erectus living between 400,000 and 500,000 years ago), the middle & late period of the Paleolithic Age (represented by the Upper Cave Men living between 100,000- 200,000 years ago), the early & middle period of the Neolithic Age (represented by Peililang Culture and Yangshao Culture dated back to 7,000 to 12,000 years ago) and the middle & late period of the Neolithic Age (represented by Longshan Culture dated back to 4,100 to 4,900 years ago). China was in the matriarchal clan society during the early period of the Neolithic Age with no distinct social classes, and it was followed by the patriarchal clan society during the middle period of the Neolithic Age, when the gap between the rich and the poor had greatly been widened and the social divisions of labors emerged with the social productive forces greatly improved.

With the development of natural science and high-technology, a number of ancient city clusters have been discovered in the Yangtze River area and the Yellow River area in recent years, including remains of Zhongyuan City, Jianghan City and Haidai City, which fully shows that great changes had taken place in the social structure system and proves that the multi-culture had coexisted during Longshan Culture Period, with a number of ancient painted potteries unearthed from the Henan Province, the Hebei Province, the Gansu Province and the Shanxi Province. At the same time, there existed Hemudu Culture of the Zhejiang Province and Dawenkou Culture of the Shandong Province during Longshan Culture Period. The subsequent Erlitou Site of Henan Province and Sanxingdui Site of Sichuan Province are representatives of cultural essences in the Bronze Age (21 B.C.-5 B.C.).

The culture in prehistoric period is comprised of the matriarchal clan culture and the patriarchal clan culture, of which the former includes Peililang Culture, Cishan Culture, Yangshao Culture, Hemudu Culture, Majiamiao Culture and Qujialing Culture, and the latter contains Longshan Culture, Dawenkou Culture and Liangzhu Culture. Compared with the matriarchal clan society, the patriarchal society made more progress in the social productive forces, which is manifested in the emergence of bronze wares, silk fabrics and Chinese letter symbols.

Pictures of Corpus Domini Flower Petal Carpets

For the procession of Corpus Domini (also called Corpus Christi), held on the Sunday nine weeks after Easter (June 10 in 2012), many Italian towns and churches create art works made of flower petals. Some are simply a flower petal design in front of a church but some towns hold an Infiorata covering the paths for the procession with elaborate flower petal carpets. These beautiful tapestries take days of planning and many hours to create.

Three years ago we went to the infiorata of Brugnato, a small town in Liguria near Cinque Terre, and watched the creation of these carpets. Take a look at this fascinating experience with these Infiorata photos and video.

What Makes a Perfect Holiday?

What makes your holiday perfect? Is it the accommodation, the weather, the destination, the food, the people, or a combination of all five?

We all get to hear about the negative points when our friends and family travel, such as delayed flights, sub-standard hotel rooms, terrible food resulting in "Spanish tummy", and lost luggage, but we rarely get to hear about what actually made their summer holiday - the perfect holiday.

Various surveys have been conducted on this subject, and while some suggest that a travellers age has something to do with it (apparently we enjoy our holidays the most when we are 34 years old!), the general consensus seems to be that it is whom we travel with that has the greatest impact.

Anyone who travels frequently will have witnessed the odd argument at the airport or hotel check-in, whereby nervous energy overtakes the excitement and turns a simple question of "who has got the passports" into a rather heated blame game! So travelling with someone you know well and have a good relationship with is a great place to start.

We believe a holiday is what you make it. One can stay in the nicest resort, have the most beautiful weather, and a great person to share it with, but if you spend the entire time waiting for the perfect holiday to 'happen', you may just miss out.

When travelling through Thailand and Malaysia in November (high season), we were subjected to an unusual burst of monsoon rains that left us stranded on Koh Samui Island for 5 days. With no planes or boats leaving the island, only one or two restaurants with electricity, and streets flooded up to knee-height, it was certainly an experience we will never forget - but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our tour round the world!

We helped our hotel staff sweep the rivers of rain from the open reception areas, we took moped taxis (3 on a bike!) through the flooded streets, and we ate dinner by candlelight as the generators only produced enough electricity to cook the food, but you know what? We made new friends, we tried new things, and we laughed from morning until night!

The hotel, the weather, the food, and the person you travel with will certainly have an impact on your holiday, but ultimately there is only one person that can make your holiday perfect, and that is you!

Can a Foreigner Open a Bank Account in Mexico?

As a foreigner in Mexico you have the same rights to open a bank account as a Mexican. If you are living in Mexico legally, and you hold either the visa "residente temporal" or the visa "residente permanente" you will not have a problem. As a tourist you will not be able to open a bank account in Mexico.

The five big main banks in Mexico are: Banorte, Bancomer, Banamex, Scotiabank and Santander. The requirements to open a bank account are the same for all five.

You will need to present your visa when you open your bank account. The visa "residente temporal" gives you permission to be in the country for a period of up to four years, where as the visa "residente permanente" gives you permission to be in the country on a more permanent basis.

You will need to show a statement from the light company, the telephone company (either fixed line or mobile contract), sky, the water company or a tax return, all which show your address. This will be enough proof for the bank to show them that you are living where you say you are.

Depending on the type of account that you wish to open, you will be required to deposit a minimum of between $1000 and $10,000 Mexican pesos. Also depending on the type of account, you may be required to deposit a minimum sum every month so as not to have the account closed or not to accumulate bank charges.

Very few foreigners will be offered any type of credit on their new account, such as a credit card, an overdraft, or a loan. Usually the type of account available to foreigners will be a savings account with either a debit card or cheque book. Bank accounts in Mexico are available in either Mexican pesos or US dollars.

Keep in mind that if you do not speak Spanish you will need to take someone along with you who can, as very few Mexican bank clerks speak sufficient English. All the bank forms will be in Spanish, however most of the form filling will be done by the bank clerk on his or her computer. You will be required to check that all the details are correct on the contract before you sign it.

Take all original documents with you for the account opening process as copies will not be accepted!

Streetwalking - A Popular Pastime in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

As fifteen year residents of Puerto Vallarta, we have seen it grow from a relatively small Mexican resort to a bustling, internationally recognized vacation and retirement destination. It seems to get more beautiful and more visitor friendly every day as we watch the dramatic changes continue to unfold in front of us.

A few years ago, the city built a modern convention center which has attracted numerous large national and international conventions to the area; the number increasing each year. This year alone, they hosted the Mexico Nuestra Belleza beauty pageant (this pageant often determines the contestants to represent Mexico in the Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International pageants), an International Meeting of Journalists conference, and PV was recently selected to host Mexico's 27th National Medical Conference with 3,800 medical related attendees. Added to those events, Vallarta recently hosted a number of competitions for the XVI Pan American Games. Also, just in the past couple of months, President Calderon came to PV to speak at the Tianguis Tourism Conference where Vallarta hosted about 7,000 conferees from all over the world. This international convention was followed three weeks later by the World Economic Forum for Latin America which hosted approximately 900 leaders from 70 different nations. Again, President Calderon spoke to the attendees and played an integral role in the convention.

In order to prepare for all these significant conventions and international events, the city leaders decided to invest a small fortune and give the city a facelift, a complete makeover. With federal and state funding, and a huge amount of local manpower, in a period of less than six months, the city has transformed itself into a showpiece.

Included among the changes were fresh paint striping of the local roads around town (lack of striping had caused some of them to become dangerous... now, the traffic tends to flow in lanes rather than be a free-for-all!), painting the curbs, crosswalks, and topes (speed bumps that can, without prior warning, ruin your wheel alignment and suspension system, destroy your wheels and tires, or even worse, wipe out the entire undercarriage of your car), painting the base of the palm trees (they painted virtually everything that didn't move!), repairing sections of the main bricked road and service roads through town, laying a new concrete highway south of town, replacing the dilapidated Los Muertos pier with a brand new modern pier, and they decided to rebuild all of the sidewalks and curbs in the Downtown and Old Town areas.

Being quaint is one thing but having sidewalks and curbs that were poorly built 50 years ago and now crumbling and heaving in every direction is another thing. Not only were they unsightly but they were quite dangerous, especially if you weren't paying attention to where you were walking. The sidewalks were so pathetic, that we had to constantly remind our visiting friends to watch every single step they took while walking downtown. If you looked up for just a second, you stood the chance of spraining an ankle, or worse. The curbs were a mess and especially bad at the street intersections; wheelchair access? You've got to be kidding!

As a side note and as an example of how inattentive visitors can be, about 10 years ago, just for entertainment while having lunch, we ran a survey to see how many tourists were paying attention to where they were walking. The restaurant we were dining in gave out phony $20 US bills as some kind of promotion encouraging a return visit. Well, we took one of these bills (an excellent counterfeit bill!) and we folded it in half and then in half again. We placed this beautiful crisp new folded $20 bill on the sidewalk where many tourists were strolling by. At least 200 people walked virtually right over it and none of them glanced down; they were all preoccupied looking in the local shops or taking in the sights and sounds of the area. As we left the restaurant, we retrieved the folded bill and used it for a discount on our next visit!

Since they were rebuilding all of the sidewalks, the city planners decided to make the entire city more pedestrian friendly. In order to do so, many of the sidewalks, especially on the main routes through Downtown and Old Town, have been doubled or even tripled in width. In fact, the entire street along the Malecon is now designated as a pedestrian area and virtually closed to automobile traffic. Fortunately, the city has three new parking garages to accommodate those that would rather drive to town than take a cab or walk.

The new sidewalks are not just plain vanilla sidewalks; they are highly decorated sidewalks with pebble stone inlays and planters along the way. Fidencio Benitez, one of the local Huichol Indians, using the "Mosaico Vallarta" technique, designed the entire network of sidewalks throughout town. Senor Benitez incorporated in his design the "Origin of Vallarta" or a place where the "Motherland meets the Ocean". Every single little cobblestone and volcanic pebble is placed by hand in the concrete resulting in an intricate Indian pattern everywhere you walk. The problem is; now that it's safe to let your eyes wander all over the place while admiring the sand sculptures, stacked rocks, or mimes along the beach, or gaze at the breathtaking Sierra Madre backdrop, or peek in one of the art galleries, restaurants, cantinas, curio shops, etc., most of the tourists are too often looking down admiring the artistry in the sidewalk.

Not only have all of these changes impressed the international visitors but they have made touring, or for that matter, living in Vallarta much safer. After all, one of the first questions that North Americans have about visiting or moving to Mexico has to do with safety. We always seem to think of safety in terms of theft, robbery, or some violent personal attack but seldom in terms of falling down and breaking something! Until the sidewalks were rebuilt, they were a real safety hazard, especially for tourists that were accustomed to nice, flat, smooth, predictable sidewalks. The sidewalk changes have been a major improvement for everyone except perhaps the hospital emergency room attendants and the local orthopedic surgeons!

The new sidewalks also provided the city planners an opportunity to bury most of the electrical and telephone cables thereby eliminating the old third world look of electrical lines running haphazardly all over the skyline. Furthermore, the new Malecon was designed and constructed to permit run off rain water from the mountains to flow under the Malecon to the bay rather than flood the downtown area. In this regard, the new sidewalks not only improved the aesthetics of the city but they improved the functionality of the city, especially in the summer during the rainy season.

As insignificant as it may seem, these new sidewalks have positively altered the entire feeling of being in Vallarta. While maintaining its charm as a Mexican coastal resort with cobblestone roads, white stucco buildings with red tile roofs, and flowers everywhere, Vallarta now has a newer, fresher, cleaner, and safer feeling about it. Many of our friends obtain a great deal of entertainment and pleasure (not to mention, exercise) from just strolling leisurely about town. "Street walking" is fast becoming a popular pastime for all of the local citizenry. Those of you that have previously been to PV will instantly feel the difference; those of you that haven't, are in for a real treat.

Now that Vallarta has become pedestrian friendly and concurrently, even safer than it was before, we hope you'll be encouraged to consider visiting this magical city in the near future. Who knows, you too may become a part time "streetwalker"!

Maui Vacation: Because Your Loved Ones Deserve a Special Weekend Treat

Wondering where to spend your next weekend getaway with your family? Why not book a Maui vacation? This lush tropical island is the second most popular in the Hawaiian chain, and it's easy to see why. From its gorgeous beaches and luxurious resorts to its abundance of outdoor adventures, Maui has plenty to offer people of all ages.

While this island paradise is known as the "Playground of the Wealthy," it's also a great spot for a budget vacation. Booking all-inclusive packages can save you a bundle on airfare and accommodations. Plus, if you fill your itinerary with affordable outdoor activities, you'll have money left over to buy your kids all the souvenirs they could want! Here are a few great ways to save money and have fun during your Maui vacation.

Go Ziplining

Treat your family to a day of ziplining with the Maui Zipline Company. This company is the most family-friendly zipline outfit on the island, offering five tandem lines ranging in length from 300 to 900 feet. You can zip side by side with your family members, taking in sweeping views of mountains, valleys, and the famous Tropical Plantation. Even the little ones can get a piece of the action; the Maui Zipline Company guarantees safe ziplining for kids as young as five!

Tours cost just $90 per person, and last up to two hours. It's important that you take note of weight and age requirements and cancellation policy, fill out the release and waiver of liability form, and make sure that none of your family members is pregnant or has a serious medical condition. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult during the tour. The Maui Zipline Company is located at 1670 Honoapiilani Hwy in Wailuku.

Explore the Caves

Discover the wonders of the underground world in Kaeluku Cavern, also known as the Hana Lava Tube. One of the world's largest lava tubes, the cave is home to beautiful stalagmites, stalactites, and flowstones. You're guaranteed never to have seen anything like this place: the walls, floors, and ceilings look just like melted chocolate! One interesting fact about the cavern is that it's completely uninhabited by insects, snakes, and bats. This makes it a perfect day trip destination for even the most squeamish of visitors!

You can explore Kaeluku Cavern any time Monday through Sunday, between 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., for just $11.95 per hour. It's located at 205 Ulaino Rd, about a 3-hour drive from Lahaina, Ka'anapili (West Maui) and Kihei, Wailea (South Maui).

Ride the Sugar Cane Train

No Maui vacation would be complete without a ride on the famous Sugar Cane Train. In the past, the train was used to take sugar cane from the fields to the harbor. Now, it carries tourists along its old route, offering gorgeous views of the countryside and the neighboring islands. See the bustling downtown of Lahaina, the decadent resorts of Kaanpali, and more! The train operates daily from stations in Puukolii, Kaanapali and Lahaina. Be sure to check the website for all arrival and departure times. A round trip costs $22.50 for adults and $15.50 for children three to 12 years old. Children under three years old can ride for free.

However you choose to spend it, a Maui vacation is guaranteed to be a good time for all. Be sure to plan ahead, so you can save money on flights, transportation, and activities. One thing's for certain: after a weekend in this tropical paradise, you and your family will be itching to come back!

Take a Short Break in Norfolk This Summer

With sunshine and clear skies quickly arriving in the UK, it's a great time to start planning a summer break. Not sure where you want to go? If you enjoy spending time amongst tranquil scenery and beautiful market towns, why not book a short break in Norfolk? With its nature reserves and historical sites, through to music festivals and city nightlife, Norfolk really has it all. There's always plenty to do in this remarkable unspoilt county and with London 2012 just around the corner, you'll find that Norfolk isn't as far from the action as you might think.

History of Norfolk

If you enjoy delving into British culture and history, there are some remarkable sites of national heritage all across Norfolk. Norwich Cathedral is a spectacular example of early medieval architecture, while a visit to Sandringham offers a rare insight into the life of the royal family. If crime and punishment is more your thing, head over to The Old Gaol House in King's Lynn, where you can find out exactly how criminals and witches were dealt with.

Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads are an intricate network of rivers and lakes which hosts some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire county. Here, you can find many unspoilt rural villages such as Woodbastwick and Ranworth, offering a peaceful way of life that you simply won't find anywhere else. But if exploring these tranquil villages isn't quite what you had in mind, you could always take in the scenery on a wonderful bike ride through the broads, or for the more adventurous, hire a boat and try your hand at navigating through them yourself.

Norfolk Wildlife

Over the years, Norfolk has often been referred to as the bird watching capital of Britain. No matter what time of year, there are plenty of species to spot, from Barn Owls and Kingfishers to the more elusive (and well-camouflaged) Bitterns. Of course, there are plenty of excellent birding locations across Norfolk - Foxley Wood being the perfect place to spot birds in a woodland environment. The High Lodge Visitor Centre in Thetford Forest provides another excellent birding spot, deep in the heart of Britain's largest lowland pine forest. For those who may be new to bird watching, there are a number of nature reserves and trails to get you started, including Weeting Heath - the very best place to spot the Stone Curlew.

The Fine City of Norwich

A bustling, vibrant city, Norwich comes alive every summer with street entertainers, music festivals and incredible nightlife. Shortlisted for UK City of Culture 2013, it is host to a variety of wonderful organisations, bringing international talent to Norfolk. At the Norwich Theatre Royal, you can watch some of the best theatrical productions from all over the world and the Norwich Arts Centre offers children and family activities throughout the summer holidays. If you'd rather spend the day shopping, enjoy some retail therapy at The Mall or barter down a bargain at Norwich Market.

Great Yarmouth

For a more family-oriented trip, you could always visit Great Yarmouth - Norfolk's biggest and most lively coastal town. With sun, sea and golden British sands, you'll have the time of your life in this wonderful seaside resort. The seafront, known locally as 'the golden mile', hosts an award-winning pleasure beach, a number of amusement arcades and a variety of traditional funfair rides (as well as some exciting, action-packed rides for the thrill-seekers).

So if you have some time off this summer, make the most of it by exploring this magnificent county. From tranquil boat-rides to all the fun of the fair, you'll find it all in Norfolk.

Bangkok for Kids

Thailand is hailed for many things including night life, shopping, and great wildlife experience even in the middle of Khao San but it is not the primary destination for people who want a family tour. This is rather unfair. There is as much to do for kids in Bangkok as much as there is for adults.

Siam Ocean World
If you want your child to see how an aquarium is supposed to look like, bring them to the Siam Ocean World in Siam Paragon Shopping Mall. Let your child tour through a glass-bottom boat and even swim with some of the friendliest sharks you will ever see.

Ice Skating
It doesn't snow in Bangkok but it doesn't stop the Central World in Siam Discovery Center to build an Olympic-size skating rink. If your child doesn't know how to skate, they can take lessons here and impress their playmates when they go back home.

Butterfly Garden
Children like chasing after butterflies. There's something about the beauty of their wings that hypnotize people into happiness. In Thailand, they don't need to chase after butterflies, butterflies will chase after them. At the Butterfly Garden in Rotfai Gardent, BTS Mochit, there are more than 500 different kinds of butterflies. The place is so huge, they can spend the whole day there running around. You can also have a picnic and go for a couple of miles on a bicycle too.

Water Parks
If you don't have the time to take them to Phuket or Phi Phi to swim, try the Water Parks. Don't worry, it's not one of those water parks where you will see nothing but slides. There are roller coaster, fairy rides, other kinds of rides, and other activities where the whole family can participate.

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum
Yao Ming has retired. You will never see him play in the NBA again but you can still see him in Madame Tusaauds Wax Museum at the Siam Discover Center. Aside from Yao Ming, other international celebrities are there including Bruce Lee, David Beckham, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise. Well, not them exactly but the wax is so life-like, you won't be able to tell the difference.

Dusit Zoo
Asia is known for its wildlife but there are very few countries that managed to support and keep their wildlife healthy. Thailand is one of them. The Dusit Zoo in Rama V Road offers you a chance to have a family bonding experience as you watch more than 800 different species of birds fly above you. You can walk, have a picnic, take train tours, or ride the boat to go around. There are tigers, lots of snakes, monkeys, and other animals.

Temples
I know it doesn't sound interesting but wait until you see the expression on your children's faces when you tell them that the Grand Temple is made of gold. Let them touch the gold, take photos with the monks that are roaming around, and stare at the former resident of the King and his family.

A Land Of Contrasts - The North And South Islands Of New Zealand

It's a tale as old as time, a never ending debate over who is more beautiful, who has more to offer, where the best accommodation in New Zealand is and who wins the "best place" "must do" "unmissable" contest. From the very Northern tip to its Southern most point, New Zealand is a land of contrast and variety. This variety comes from being stretched from 34 to 47 degrees south in latitude, while being comparatively narrow in longitude.

The length of New Zealand is commonly referred to as "Cape Reinga to The Bluff", although neither of these are truly the northern or southern most points, they serve as a convenient start point for comparison.

In terms of climate though, the true variation is between East and West on both islands. New Zealand sits resolutely in the middle of the legendary "Roaring Forties", exposed to moisture laden Easterlies, which seem to drop their rain on the west coast before encountering the mountainous ranges which form the spine of New Zealand. In the South Island, where the Southern Alps reign, this effect is far more pronounced. In general terms, it is colder in the South than the North, but as a Maritime nation, the weather changes swiftly and sometimes without warning.

The North Island has much to offer in terms of beach swimming and surfing, with many sunny spots perfect for catching a wave. The Bay of Islands is a classic New Zealand destination with accommodation ranging from stunning seaside campsites to pitch your tent to luxury hotels. The North Island has the central focus of New Zealand's famed geothermal activity in the Central Plateau region with geysers, mud pools, and steaming lakes. The Auckland region is home to over a third of all New Zealanders, and three quarters of all New Zealanders inhabit the North Island, despite the South Island being 33% bigger in landmass. The capital city of New Zealand, Wellington, is also located in the North Island. The population in the North Island is markedly more urban and ethnically diverse. The North Island has the main centres for tourism centred on Maori culture.

The South Island then, is a land of splendid isolation. Fewer people, fewer cars, fewer distractions and interruptions...unless you call the sound of the many unique native birds calling distracting! The South Island is dominated by the massive Southern Alps and is home to not just the highest mountain in New Zealand but the thirty highest peaks are all there. The Southern Alps can be crossed at only four points and these "passes" Haast, Lewis, Arthurs and the Mackinnon form some of New Zealand's famed driving trails. The most popular tourist destination in the South Island is Queenstown, base for skiing and all manner of adventure tourism, including the famous New Zealand invention of bungee jumping. The South Island is also home to six of the nine Department of Conservation "Great Walks" including the stunning Heaphy and Milford Tracks. Accommodation on these trails is in the form of large bunkhouses which sleep 40-50 and must be booked in advance.

In many ways, New Zealand is truly a nation of contrasts with something for everyone. Art lovers and museum goers can get their fix in the urban centres and find accommodation in a boutique city centre hotel, nature lovers and bird watchers can pitch a tent or park in campervan miles from anywhere. It's all about knowing how to match your dream with your destination.

Exploring the Most Famous Sights of Venice

Long before you climb into your Venice airport water taxi you will undoubtedly be aware that Venice has many famous sights to share with you. You may be familiar with such sights as St Mark's Square, but there are many others to enjoy as well. Some of the highlights are noted below.

The Grand Canal

You may get your first glimpse of the Grand Canal as you make your way up it in a Venice airport water taxi. But make sure you go back for another look when you have settled into your accommodation. The entire canal is around two and a third miles in length and you can hop in a vaporetto or a famous gondola to enjoy seeing the city from the water. You may see people already enjoying the gondolas with their familiar gondoliers navigating them as you make your way into the city courtesy of a Venice airport water taxi.

The Rialto Bridge

While you are exploring all that the Grand Canal has to offer, you will have the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at the Rialto Bridge. There has been a bridge in this spot for more than eight hundred years, although the bridge you see today was created in the late 1580s. You can travel underneath it on a boat and also walk over it - and it is worth seeing it from both angles. The bridge has shops you can browse in as well, since it has long been a much loved market for the locals and tourists.

St Mark's Campanile

You have heard of St Mark's Square, but St Mark's Campanile is another famous sight the city has to offer. Otherwise known as the Campanile di San Marco in Italian, this is a grand clock tower that can be seen from many parts of the city. There has long been a tower here, and while this one is not the original it does still date back to 900. As you might imagine, a clock tower that has stood for over a thousand years has not been without damage during that time. Significant damage occurred back in the early 1500s, when an earthquake threatened to fell it completely. Restoration brought it back to life and it stood tall until the early 1900s when it collapsed once again. Although it needed to be completely rebuilt this time, it was done so it would look identical to the previous tower. You can go to the top of the tower to look out over St Mark's Square - it's an amazing view to behold.

This beautiful and renowned city is certainly packed with attractions and sights that are well worth seeing. It is wise to remember that the city has a lot of history too, as you can see from the above sights alone. When you first approach in your Venice airport water taxi you will immediately start to uncover some of the secrets this amazing city has to share. Which famous location will you visit first?

Four Great Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Destinations

The Eastern Mediterranean has become an increasingly popular cruise destination over the past ten or so years and with so much on offer it's easy to see why. The region's history, culture and fantastic weather make it the ideal cruise getaway. This article takes a look at a few of the region's most popular Mediterranean cruise destinations, to give you an idea of what's on offer.

Athens

We start with one of the region's most famous cities, the Greek capital: Athens. Known for being the birthplace of Western civilization, the city of Athens is packed full history and culture. The city is one of the more popular destinations in the Mediterranean, with sites like the Acropolis, which features the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea, providing a big draw. Other popular attractions include the Ancient Agora and the Kerameikos Cemetery, as well as the cities many museums and art galleries.

Venice

If you're after a little romance then a trip to the beautiful city of Venice might be a good idea. The city is one of the most popular destinations in Italy and it makes for the ideal cruise stop. The city is most famous for the canals that thread through it but its history and culture are also a big draw. Popular sites within the city include St. Mark's Basilica, San Giacomo di Rialto, the Rialto Bridge and the Zattere.

Istanbul

When it comes to beautiful architecture and ancient history Istanbul is hard to beat. With its blend of Western culture and modernity and ancient Turkish history the city is a fascinating place to visit. The city is packed full of little bazaars selling all sorts of goods, great for anyone who likes a little shopping. Highlights include the Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern and the Blue Mosque, all of which are well worth a visit. It's not just the major sites though; a walk around the city will allow you to enjoy some of Istanbul's famous architecture.

Dubrovnik

Located on Croatia's Southern coast, the city of Dubrovnik is one of the Eastern Mediterranean's lesser visited gems. Whilst it may not have the 'wow' factor of the larger cities, like Istanbul or Athens, it makes up for it with its charming setting. The city today is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its beautifully preserved historic town centre. Popular sites in the city include the Bell Town, Sponza Palace, the 18th century Church of St. Ignatius and the Placa Stradun.

Capri in Italy and Paraty in Brazil are Twin Towns

The town of Capri on the island of Capri is now a twin town, gemellaggio, of Paraty in Brazil, according to a Brazil Travel post, where you will see a photo of Paraty. Both towns are noted for their scenic coast, picturesque architecture, and good hotels and restaurants. Paraty is is also known for its unusual carnival celebration - the Paraty Mud Carnival.

Capri, one of only two towns on the island, sits above Marina Grande and is connected to the harbor by a funicular railway, or tram. The island has been a favorite for tourists since the days of ancient Rome and is still a top place to visit from the Amalfi Coast or Naples.

Introducing Faro and The Algarve

Your Faro airport taxi is taking you towards one of Europe's most popular holiday destination cities and surrounding areas. What's the big attraction?

Weather

This one may as well be dealt with quickly because although it's obvious, it remains important. The Algarve can, of course, be hot but it's also cooled by some fantastic sea breezes making it very popular with people who like the sun but with some air movement as well.

Culture

Portugal has a very distinctive culture that is quite different to its Spanish Iberian neighbour.

You can't easily describe this in words - it is something that has to be experienced rather than "intellectualised". Yet you may see signs of it even from your Faro airport taxi, in the roadside fish barbeques, the relaxed attitudes of the people and the very different architectures. Portugal was arguably the first great overseas European empire after the Romans, and their early explorations and colonisation have also made a huge impact on the culture. You'll see signs of that in the language, cuisine and building styles.

Friendliness

People everywhere can be friendly given the right circumstances but this is particularly so in Portugal - even the driver of your Faro airport taxi will go above and beyond to make your holiday memorable. There is a genuine eagerness to help people enjoy their country and lifestyle - something that may help make your stay that bit more enjoyable and special.

Cuisine

If you love fish, simple fish, then you'll love Faro and the Algarve (in fact, Portugal in general). The famous street-corner barbeques where fresh sardines are grilled and eaten simply in bread with a little olive oil are heaven. Of course, Portugal also has its own culinary traditions that can be more complex. Take, for example, caldeirada. This is a spicy and pungent fish stew that has its origins on the Portuguese fishing boats, but which today has blossomed into a dish that manages to be both subtly complex yet simple at the same time. If you fancy a change from fish, try the enchidos - a variety of sausages that are quite delicious.

History

If you like history and ancient sites, then Portugal's Algarve won't let you down. Faro itself has some incredible ancient buildings in the old town, and the smaller city of Lagos (pronounced Lagosh) is also worth making the effort to get along to explore. You might also want to stroll around the harbour of Faro. Particularly in the evening when the town comes out to relax and play, this is a great centre of social activity and a marvellous place to spend a happy hour or two as the sun goes down.

Convenience

The Algarve is readily reachable by air from most major European centres. The Faro airport taxi will get you into the centre very quickly and, from that point on, you can stop theorising about what a great destination this is and start actually enjoying it.

Top Tourist Attractions in Hua Hin Thailand

Hua Hin is located 200 kilometers south of Bangkok, making it easily accessible. It used to be a small fishing community until the arrival of the railway line connecting Bangkok to Surat Thani in the south. Today Hua Hin's railway station, still showcasing the old royal waiting room on the platform, has itself become a popular historical attraction.

As Thailand's oldest resort town, Hua Hin dates back to the 1920's when it was the summer holiday destination of choice for Thai royalty and affluent tourists alike.

Due to the area having its own moderate micro climate, never really seeing major weather fluctuations and subsequent floods, even King Rama VI had his summer palace in Hua Hin until the early 1900's. Located approximately 25 kilometers outside the city centre, the palace is now a popular attractions to visit. Bicycling the palace grounds which borders the beach and strolling through the perfectly maintained gardens and old palace passages transports you back to yesteryear. Today, His Majesty King Bhumibol, Thailand's current reigning monarch, also has his palace here. Hua Hin definitely deserves its reputation as Thailand's royal town.

In recent years, Hua Hin has seen tremendous growth in tourist arrival numbers and, apart from its great weather and close proximity to Bangkok, these are not the only reasons.

Hua Hin sports the finest hotels, spa retreats and beach side resorts offering top family friendly facilities. Many, or even most of these are located along miles upon miles of white sandy beaches. The benefit of staying in a beach side retreat here is that beaches are not over crowded and the noise of tens of jet skis do not disturb your peace.

The main beach does offer a host of other family friendly activity. Pony rides for the kids, kiting and kiting lessons, wind surfing and banana boat riding. The beach also shelves very slowly and there are no big waves making it safe and ideal for swimming.

There are several day, night and weekend markets to explore and all offer restaurants and food vendors selling exotic delicacies.

A short, scenic drive brings you to Pal-U waterfall featuring several tiers and perfect for hot days of fun and picnic.

The area has also become famous for its world-class golf courses, both in Hua Hin and neighbouring Cha-am.

An elephant camp offering elephant rides are nearby and two floating markets have recently been added to the town's attractions.

The Black Mountain water park is also a recent addition with pools, water slides and even a wake boarding cable.

The vibrant Pak Nam Pran fishing village is known for its delectable squid specialties and colourful fishing boats.

Also in the same area is the Pranburi Forest Park which is great for a leisurely hike. It features a beautiful mangrove forest teeming with a variety of crab species, Kingfishers, Egrets, wild Peacock and 3 meter long monitor lizards. Here you can go on a boat cruise to Monkey Island and Sam Roy Yod National Park and also participate in kayak and eco tours through the mangroves.

Many people won't know, but if you are in Hua Hin, spending a night or two on an island is also on the cards. Only 90 minutes outside Hua Hin is Prachuabkhirikhan. From here you can take a boat to the island of Koh Talu, a 30 minute boat ride away and stay in the island's resort. It's a great spot for snorkeling.

Finally, Hua Hin is famous for its restaurants serving both delectable Thai, other Asian and western favourites. Many of these are located on the pier, along the beachfront or in tranquil garden settings. The nightlife is moderate, but down town Hua Hin has an uplifting and exiting atmosphere and strolling along the winding, narrow little streets you can amuse your self with the many sites, smells and sounds.

Ice Fishing During Your Minnesota Vacation

In Minnesota, the natives take their winter fishing seriously. Every detail from location to equipment to comfort--is carefully considered, with comfort being quite high on the list! On a beautiful, sunny day, it is a pleasure to experience the action of catching a fish and reeling it up through the ice. With little preparation and over 5,000 fishable lakes, anglers of all ages and skill levels can easily enjoy the peaceful nature of ice fishing during an exciting Minnesota winter vacation.

Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". According to the MN Department of Natural Resources, there are actually closer to 12,000 lakes in the state. Of these nearly 12,000 lakes, 5,493 of them are fishable--and that doesn't include fishable rivers and streams! Many of these lakes are are located within close proximity right in the heart of Central Minnesota--a popular Minnesota vacation destination--and can be fished in the summer or winter.

Winter ice fishing, if you have never been, is sometimes difficult to imagine. If you have ever seen the movie "Grumpy Old Men" and have never been ice fishing, the scenes from the movie may be your only concept of the sport. While it is true that the situation on the ice can be very much like a small community and there are rustic houses such as those depicted in the film, the amenities of a really first class "fish house" can be quite extensive! The more elaborate houses contain full kitchens, televisions and bunks to accommodate overnight fishermen in comfort. One way or another, they can all be heated for a plush Minnesota ice fishing excursion.

It is also a common sight to see folks of all ages sitting on a folding chair or an overturned pail near their fishing hole without the cover of a fish house on nice sunny days. With or without the cover of a fish house, you can experience ice fishing on great Minnesota fishing lakes.

Don't shy away from telling the locals that you are planning to go ice fishing and asking them for any tips. Since Minnesota is first in the nation for the number of fishing licenses sold per capita (according the MN DNR), your chances of finding an angler to help you out are quite good! Often, you will find out not only a hot spot to check out but also a few insights such as how deep the fish are and what time of day they have been biting.

There are plenty of opportunities to simply walk or to drive (via auto, snowmobile or ATV) out onto the ice to fish. Yes, it's true: the ice on the lakes gets thick enough to drive on during the winter! It is advised that you check the ice conditions on your lake to confirm it is thick enough before going out. The Minnesota DNR website provides great information about ice safety.

In addition to checking the ice conditions before heading out on the ice, you will want to gather your fishing gear. Some basic fishing gear you may want or need include: a fishing rod and reel, fishing line, bait and tackle, bobber, ice auger, ice chisel, ice scoop. Ice fishing rods are much shorter than an open water fishing rod; most anglers use a rod that is approximately 28 inches in length. It is best to spool your line on the reel before you hit the ice. Most stores that sell rods and line will be able to assist you with this task.

Once you've reached your destination on the ice, you must drill a hole through the ice. An ice auger is a special drill manufactured specifically for this task. The holes are typically 8-10 inches in diameter, depending on your auger. In popular fishing spots, these outdoor holes are often open from use by previous fishermen. If you locate an open hole that has been left by a previous angler, it is okay to use one of these. An ice chisel is used to break open the thinner ice that reforms over the holes, and the ice chips are removed with the assistance of an ice scoop to clear the hole. The line with baited hook is dropped into the hole to the proper depth, and a bobber can be attached to the line so you can see when a fish is nibbling the bait down below.

A successful ice fishing trip, doesn't end when you step off the ice. Pan fish bite readily and it isn't difficult to bring enough fish back to shore for an excellent lunch. Walleye is one of the most sought-after fish in Minnesota, and proves to be a tasty treat for all of your drilling, bobbing and reeling efforts. A nice lunch starring your catch of the day will definitely put the Minnesota style into your ice fishing vacation.

If you are vacationing in Minnesota, know that many MN resorts are fully equipped to provide visitors with everything needed for a fun Minnesota ice fishing expedition. They can direct you to the nearest MN fishing licensing office. They also have the knowledge to get you started on your adventure, including bait and tackle, instructions and directions to the best places to try your luck. They even have fish houses all set up and ready to use for those who prefer to be indoors while catching their dinners. It is quite an experience to sit in a fish house, watching a football game, playing cards or reading a good book while waiting for a bite on your line!

Minnesota is also home to the world's largest charitable ice fishing contest: The Brainerd Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza. This ice fishing competition is held each January in Brainerd, MN. With tons of prizes to be won and over 10,000 anglers on the ice at once, the Ice Fishing Extravaganza offers a truly unique ice fishing experience for all--one that is quite different from going out on the ice in a cozy fish house!

Whether you hit the ice with only your rod & reel or with a few extras for added comfort, a Minnesota fishing vacation in the winter is an experience you won't forget.

Breezy Point resort offers Minnesota vacations to thousands of guests that come back year after year. Visit http://www.breezypointresort.com/ to learn more!

Surfing in Brazil

Location: Eastern South America

Language: Portuguese

Brazil is a country known for being a paradise for surfers. The southern part of Brazil is the best one for surfing. It offers a wide range of waves for every level.

One of the favorite spots is Fernando de Noronha - it is a small and incredibly beautiful island located in the north of the country. Surfing there is popular all year round, there are numerous surfing schools and instructors which will teach you if you are a beginner. Besides surfing on Fernando de Noronha you may try scuba diving which is also extremely popular here.

Not far from Rio de Janeiro there is a small village called Saquarema. It boasts of more than 15 miles of extremely beautiful beaches. The conditions for surfing here are great all year round. The place is known for holding a National Surfing Competition.

The island of Santa Catarina is another spot which is famous among surfers from different corners of Brazil and of the rest of the world. It is loved for a great quality of waves. The most well-known ones are Mocambique and Santinho.

Even though surfing is strongly associated with Hawaii and California, Brazil has also become a popular destination for that kind of sport. It is always associated with young, beautiful and tanned people. Surfing is a pretty difficult and challenging sport, but only imagine yourself riding the waves. This feeling is definitely worth all this effort. Brazil is a good place not only for the professionals but for the beginners as well.

First you will be practicing on the shore. It is the most essential part of the training and only after that when you are ready for water you will be given a chance to ride your first wave, but be prepared that it is not easy. It requires a lot of practicing and good fitness. You will learn how to balance your whole body and as soon as you do you will understand how incredible this is. If you have ever seen "Point Break" with Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves you will probably have an idea of what I am talking about. If you haven't, you should watch it immediately! After that grab your suitcase and go to Santa Catarina, a travel agency in Florianapolis will help you choose the best option for an unforgettable vacation.

The only disadvantage of surfing in Brazil is that during the hot spots it gets super crowded. But despite that you will always find places with almost no people or really no people at all.

The resort is complete with a supermarket should you wish to stay in and cook or snack occasionally, or you can pop in to the delicatessen or the boulangerie for special treats while you browse the ski shops choosing among the latest in ski apparel. But after a full day on the slopes food becomes the focal point of the evening's activities, so you need to know where you can eat with the best deals available, while still keeping quality in mind. We are here to help!

Le Farcon restaurant with one Michelin star

If you really want to leave your chalet, La Tania has the wonderful Le Farcon restaurant, just a short walk from your temporary home. The restaurant boasts a Michelin star, held since 2005. Lunch is available at just 25 Euros and includes a three course gastronomy extravagance. It is in the evening, however, that the restaurant will show you just why it holds that one Michelin star approval rating. The menu offers high quality food accompanied by the best wines available. For a short while, you will be able to believe you are dining in one of Paris' finest restaurants.

You have a preference for a cocktail bar?

After leaving your chalet, La Tania is home to La Tiaga, on the main road through the village. There's a tranquil cocktail bar downstairs with a charming restaurant upstairs. They're very strong on modern savoir fare and can mix and match many different styles of salads. All of their deserts are made on the premises, so you will need to leave a little room for the end of your meal.

A taste of home?

If burgers, chilli, tandoori or ribs tickle your tastebuds, the Pub le Ski Lodge offers a great range of well priced meals. Of course you'll find traditional steaks and pasta too, and vegetarians are well catered for. At lunch times there is always a soup special to fight off the cold and a special dish of the day to entice in hungry skiers.

Time for a fondue?

Meat and cheese fondues are always on offer at La Ferme. Always a treat for a ski holiday, fondues are often top of people's choices, après ski. The wine list is long and offers many options at fine prices - so you won't feel extravagant if you order another bottle.

It has to be pizza

The Hotel Telemark opens its bar by 3pm and the restaurant at 7pm. Pizzas are available both to eat in and takeaway giving you the option to return to your chalet. La Tania comes alive after dark so if you want to stay out there is a varied choice of bar snacks for an entertaining après ski.

A final note can be made to add the Hotel Montana to your list of buffet lunches for around 15 Euros to provide a quick and substantial alternative.

Stressed Employees Should Consider Beach Vacations

Are you an enlisted soldier in a war torn conflict zone? Are you a firefighter, airline pilot, military general, or police officer in a crime riddled city? Perhaps you are an event coordinator, public relations specialist, corporate executive, taxi driver, or a war correspondent. Whatever the case, these professions were the top ten most stressful careers of 2011. If you work in one of these capacities, you're probably incredibly stressed and in dire need of a few beach vacations. This might be the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate after spending long hours performing in one or more of these jobs.

Researching the many beach vacations that are available to consumers is one way to begin de-stressing. While researching anything may seem like more work, studies suggest that even the time spent fantasizing or imagining relaxing scenarios will, in fact, relax the body in reality. Choosing a place that would suit you, your family, or even friends is the first step. Once you have chosen a great spot, you can begin pricing flights, hotels, spas, or resorts that respond to your every need. While many of the aforementioned professions force those who work them to live on a budget, scouting out budget beach vacations might be the best bet for you and your family.

Once you have racked up enough vacations days, make time to book your flight and lodging and then begin looking for events that might be going on in the area. Of course, this won't be necessary if all you're looking for is relaxing by the beach with a cocktail while the kids play in the sand. Of course, if kids are around, you may want to take them to a local museum, aquarium, or children's play house. If you're going with a spouse or special friend, there may be romantic events and locations for you to visit while on vacation.

Sometimes going through a travel agent can be a good move, especially if you have little to no time to research your excursion when you're not working. Some agencies even offer special packages for those who are specifically looking for beaches and to de-stress from daily life. It might take some time to shop around for the right agent, but because this market is so competitive, it is very easy to find a travel agent or travel company in most major cities. Consult with experienced agencies that have high ratings on various websites. This will ensure that the money you spend on an agency won't be wasted on incompetent travel planners.

For those who are stressed and desiring a getaway with a relaxing time near the ocean, do a little research and find out what is most cost efficient for your household. Try to shop around for a cost-friendly travel agency so that your wallet won't be broken before you take flight toward the beach. With a little time and perseverance, anyone can find a great vacation getaway that won't be soon forgotten!

Walking Holidays - Not Just Ordinary Sightseeing

The whole point of visiting other countries is to get to know them better isn't it? Walking holidays are undoubtedly one of the best ways to really get familiar with a country or region.

A Change Of Pace

If your idea of a sightseeing tour involves riding around with a large group of people you hardly know in a bus, taking a few minutes at various tourist spots to take pictures and buying overpriced souvenirs, this type of travel will surely give you a welcome change. With this kind of travel you will have an opportunity to have an authentic experience of how life is in the places you visit, with more time to savour and appreciate the true beauty a town, city, country or region offers.

With everything happening on ground level, walking holidays offer experiences that are up close and personal. More than just observing from the confines of tour buses, with only a few minutes for picture taking, visitors are taken by experienced and knowledgeable tour professionals through routes that enable them to take in more than just mere sights, but sounds, smells, tastes and more - truly engaging all the senses.

Fast and Slow

There are many types of walking holidays available these days - often tailor-made to perfectly suit various tastes, interests, even athletic ability. For instance, many of the tours available use routes that are gentle, easily navigated by even those with limited physical strength and stamina; but there are more challenging treks for those who would prefer a higher level of exertion. In fact, there are even those that combine walking with mountain trekking, cycling, diving, and even extreme sports! Customised tours are offered by many professional tour groups.

What Kind Do You Like?

Walking holidays are also designed depending on interests. Among the most popular, of course, are historic tours, where visitors are guided through routes that that tell the story of a place or region from its beginnings to the present day. The history- or even prehistory- of many areas is often included. Walking holidays to Peru, for instance, will take you through archaeological sites and monuments from pre-Columbian times, offering a glimpse of Mayan, Aztec and Incan civilisations. Walk through eras from Greek to Roman to Ottoman and the like in Turkey and its surrounding nations, or experience the various dynasties in China and other Asian sites. The possibilities are endless!

If your interests lie more in nature, flora and fauna, there are walking holidays designed for those as well. Birding enthusiasts, for instance will appreciate tours offering exotic bird life in South and Central America, as well as other tropical regions. Safari tours in between walks in South Africa, on the other hand, will show you exotic wildlife in their habitat. Can't decide? Just pick one - you'll have such a great time you'll be planning your next one before it's over!

Hiking in Tuscany

There are many things that naturally come to mind when you think of Tuscany: villas that offer picturesque views of vineyards and olive groves, winding roads, wine tasting and fabulous food. But, did you know that there's a great way to work off all those calories from all that Italian food and wine? Because, as it happens, it is also a great place for hiking.

There are many hiking tours in the region that will lead you to some of the most wonderful sights. The hiking itself will be rewarding, but the real prize can be in treasures that lie at the end of the trail. There are hiking tours for every level of hiker, too.

One of the best hikes, designed for intermediate to advanced hikers, is the trek to Monte Forato - a great stone arch. Your hike starts at the small village of Fornovolasco, and you will hike up 800 meters during this 10 km hike. Along the way, you'll see the ruins of an old watermill and of a medieval church. You'll also pass a cave that legend called the entrance to hell, because of the strange sounds the water makes passing in the cave. When you reach the arch of Monte Forato, which is an impressive 12 meters high, you'll have an unbelievable view out to the Tuscan coast to your west. If you're planning to take this hike, there are several base camp choices in Tuscany. Villas are widely available in and around Fornovolasco.

Throughout Italy, there are 650 miles of paths collectively called the Monginevro to Rome. This trek goes from Canterbury to Rome, and is the path that the Archbishop of Canterbury followed as he came back from Rome after his investiture in 969. 220 miles of this road are in Tuscany. Villas are available in many areas near the trek, allowing hikers to experience just a little of the trail and come back to a home base; or travel a larger portion of the road, changing accommodations along the way. The trek is divided into stages of roughly 15 miles each. You can easily buy a trail guide that will help you navigate as much or as little of the path as you'd like.

Another wonderful hike is to the trek to the Mugello waterfall. This trek begins near Florence and will pass by a lake, rivers and beautiful forests before ending at the majestic waterfall. The hike is fairly easy, and can be completed in less than half a day.

For those who don't want to hike alone, there are plenty of companies that offer hiking tours. It's a great way to experience the vineyards, ruins, and coastline of Tuscany. Villa proprietors can often help you to find a good tour company in the area where you plan to stay. There's so much to see in the beautiful region of Italy, it will certainly be hard to choose which places to see first. But, if you're a hiking enthusiast, there is no doubt that you will want to experience some of th stunning region on foot.

If you want to know more about the city's naval history, this is the museum for you. The museum is known for presenting a thrilling history of naval exploits in the whole of Italy, not just Venice, so it is well worth a look. The entrance is easy to spot as it is marked out by two enormous anchors. Inside you will find models of famous ships, a complete exhibit featuring items from World War II - including a torpedo - and also a gondola that belonged to none other than Peggy Guggenheim.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Most people are familiar with the Guggenheim name. Peggy became rich as a result of her father's legacy to her, left when he died in the Titanic disaster. During her lifetime Peggy amassed an impressive collection of artwork and she found a home for it in the floating city. You can now see her private collection which includes works from such names as Picasso, Duchamp, Magritte and Pollock. Be sure you don't miss the Sculpture Garden either, as this features sculptures by the likes of Goldsworthy and Giacometti among others.

Museo Correr

If you have a liking for art and you want to learn more about the history of the city, the Museo Correr should feature on your list of places to go when you disembark from your Venice airport water taxi. The museum is named after Teodoro Correr, who left his collection to the city upon his death in 1830. The museum is laid out over several floors and in a collection of rooms, each presenting a period of Venetian history through artwork and other items. As such you can see portraits of aristocrats in times gone by, as well as an impressive display of cartography that shows how the city has changed over the years. Artists whose works are presented here include Lorenzo Lotto, Stefano Veneziano and Jacopo Bellini.

These represent just three of the many museums worth seeing while you are in this stunning city. You may even see some of them as you approach via a Venice airport water taxi. But there are others, including Ca'Pesaro, a modern art gallery, and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, an impressive collection of archaeological discoveries and artwork from many areas. It would take some considerable time to visit all the museums, but by choosing just two or three to visit while you are there, you can get a feel for and an understanding of this city that goes way beyond the surface.

Trying La Tania - Top Tips on the Resort

If you have any questions about staying in a ski chalet, La Tania or the Three Valleys in general, you may find some of the answers here.

Where is La Tania?

This is a ski resort set high in the French Alps. It's part of the world-famous Thee Valleys ski and winter sports area.

What's the skiing like?

There are about 150km of pistes with heights ranging between 1300-2700 metres. You can connect with the famous resorts and slopes of Meribel, Val Thorens and Courchevel. There is also a nursery slope in the centre of the village. Many of the blue and red runs are north facing and snow cannons are there to cover shortages. On the whole, the snow record is good.

What's the accommodation and culture like?

The resort was purpose built in the 1990s for the winter Olympics. It provides a wide range of accommodation for all budgets, but perhaps tends to target more moderately priced requirements than the typically slightly more expensive locations of Courchevel and Meribel.

If you're looking for a good quality but sensibly priced chalet, La Tania may well be able to meet your needs.

How's the après-ski?

There is a very good range of bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes.

Generally the resort is known as being lively rather than sedate, but it doesn't make the transition into rowdiness and excess that may come with some ski resorts.

Is it easy to get to?

Yes! Flights are into Geneva or Chambery. Rail links from Paris (some through connections from London also) are to Moutiers, which is only about half an hour away by road. Driving is also easy, with excellent autoroute or dual carriageway connections from the channel ports to within just a few kilometres of the resort and local roads from there. In terms of your chalet, La Tania chalets will most likely be located just outside of the very centre as the central areas tend to be occupied by hotel and apartment accommodation.

What are prices like?

That varies. For example, in terms of eating, it's possible to eat good, modest food at reasonable prices, but equally there is Michelin star level cuisine available where, obviously, you'll be paying considerably more.Generally, prices overall may strike you as being reasonable compared to some other resorts and it's usually possible to save by taking special deals and lift pass options.

Can you take lessons?

Yes, there are excellent schools available with fully qualified instructors.

Are group or dedicated chalets available?

Yes. There are innumerable options available from shared to dedicated (group or family) - entirely as you require.

How would you sum up the resort?

This is a great resort with some excellent skiing - and one which links up well with the total Three Valleys network. It offers a slightly more homely alternative to the rather more polished locations such as Meribel and Courchevel. If you're looking for a chalet, La Tania has some good accommodation coupled with a relaxing and vibrant culture.

There Are More Options Than You Might Think For Adult Cruises

There are very few services that cater specifically for adult cruises. In America there aren't any of the main lines that don't allow children at all. If getting away from it all to you means getting away from noisy kids too then there are ways that you can enjoy a more relaxed and mature experience, even if it isn't specifically catered for.

Some adult cruises cater to very specific needs however. They might be for singles looking for romance or just for couple. These would only allow adults on board. There are even naturist cruises or ones for the more sexually adventurous. Keep this in mind if you want to avoid any confusion when booking.

If you cannot find anything to a destination of your choice which specifically doesn't allow kids then a luxury cruise might be the next best option. They are more expensive but because of this they are not very popular with families. There would also be a lot more activities that you might prefer and you also have more options for fine dining.

Even on the average ship there might be areas where children are not permitted. There might be entire levels that are reserved for luxury suites. Generally there are also many areas that kids are not allowed in. They obviously would not be interested in spa treatments and would not visit the bars and clubs and there are often pool decks which have an age limit.

There are also some destinations that are not appealing to youths and families that you would prefer. These could be places that offer history and culture or cities with a more up-market atmosphere. People are also less likely to take children on longer voyages to places like Europe or Asia and these would be much more popular with retired people.

Some destinations might be even more extreme like Antarctic or Arctic cruises. They might not offer all the entertainment that you would get on a normal ship but the whole experience would be far more rewarding. In fact there is really no other way to experience the remote and spectacular scenery that you will see. These are also unlikely to popular with families.

If you want to have a better chance of experiencing adult cruises you can also choose certain times of the year. School holidays or spring break would obviously be more popular with families and students. You may even get a better deal at these times.

You can find a review of the reasons why you should choose adult cruises and information about cruises from NJ, right now.
