More Good Tourism Numbers Out Of Mauritius

Statistics regarding the tourism industry in Mauritius continue to be a mixed bag in 2012, with the latest round coming by way of the Bank of Mauritius regarding the 12 months ending January 31. Reuters is reporting that the bank's most recent numbers indicate an increase of more than 12% in total tourism revenues from February 2011 through January 2012. According to an official statement by the Bank of Mauritius receipts during the period amounted to "44.2 billion rupees ($1.52 billion) compared to 39.4 billion registered over the previous corresponding period."

In addition, tourism revenues just from this past January alone rose just over 34% despite the fact that the government reported a drop in the total number of arrivals of about 3%. That means that even though were fewer tourists coming to Mauritius in January they were spending significantly more money per-person. That's a fairly important statistic when you consider the fact that tourism makes up nearly 10% of the Mauritian GDP.

This year there are a couple of new resorts slated to open as well some current properties undergoing significant renovations.
