During Thrissur Pooram, all of Kerala is garbed in the most beautiful gold and the most striking fireworks. While numerous temples showcase the finest of Kerala culture, each year the organisers aim to show unique and dazzling pyrotechnic displays.
The Thrissur Pooram is a colourful festival which began nearly 200 years ago, and was organised by the ruler of Cochin, Sakthan Thampuran, who united the 10 temples surrounding the Vadakkunnathan temple and decided to have a collective and grand event during the auspicious months of April to May. This particular time is called Medam, according to the Malayalam calendar and this festival calls upon all surrounding villages to participate in the endless number of festivities.
Most tourists would identify the Thrissur Pooram as a strictly Hindu festival, but in fact this event is different from others in that it is celebrated by Catholics and Muslims as well. The Catholic influence over the Thrissur Pooram is due to its maker Sakthan Thampuranwho is also believed to be responsible for the 36 hour time-line for the festival. As such, this event draws in scores of people to witness the grand processions thought the town of Thrissur; most notably, the famous elephants dressed in gold.
These elephants are a sight to behold, strolling down the streets with their ornamental golden headdress, or 'nettipattam', softly marching to the near cacophonic compilation of drums and the singular wind instrument in the 'panchavadyam'; the 'kombu'. There are additional displays such as colourful and mesmerizing parasol exchanges, intriguing drum concerts and fire-breathers. These innumerable attractions can only be trumped by the splendid firework show that the Thrissur Pooram has become famous for.
This event is well known for its fireworks displays which normally begin at 3 am and finish at 6 am. Each year the organisers aim to show unique and dazzling pyrotechnic displays and have garnered a reputation for putting on a fantastic spectacle which is sure to inspire awe in residents and visitors alike.
The festival is quite a long and dazzling engagement and those who wish to seek accommodation in keeping with the lavish festival, should stay at a Kerala resort. In fact, there is a splendid Kumarakom resort that offers an unbeatable atmosphere surrounded by mangrove forests, coconut groves and beautiful waterways. This beautiful resort offers guests the opportunity to relax in "God's own country" whilst still having the ease of access to the festival excitement.
