New Zealand's Most Popular Walks

The beauty, tranquillity, and incredible landscape are not the only great things about the country's walking holidays. New Zealand offers some the finest hiking and strolling opportunities in the world, amongst some of the most impressive and other-worldly landscape you'll find. The country's Department of Conservation has produced a collection of the country's very finest walks, publicising details about them on their website. These are the premier walks throughout the islands. Because many of the walks have regulated visitor numbers, some of them do require that visitors book in advance to allow those who look after the infrastructure to manage the numbers and minimise the impact on the environment. Of course, there are a number of travel companies offering organised tours that will both take care of the administration and ensure that you get to sample a variety of the routes available on your walking holidays. New Zealand's Department of Conservation considers the following to be the cream of the country's trails.

Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk

This walk takes place in the south-west part of the sprawling Te Urewera National Park. The walk is a 46 km hike around the lion's share of the lake's circumference. The hike takes around three to four days in its entirety and it is important that visitors who are embarking on the route book huts and campsites for their accommodation before they start. (Again, a tour company will organise all this for you.) The walk takes in a large range of terrains and many different types of vegetation.

Heaphy Track

This walk is located in the northern part of the South Island and is the longest of the Department of Conservation walks, stretching over an ambitious 78.4 km. The route is well established and is suitable for the fit and well-equipped taking part in walking holidays. New Zealand's Kahurangi National Park has a good infrastructure, with bridges crossing all of the rivers and major streams and a mountain bike trail available for those who favour two wheels over two boots. The route takes four to six days to walk and two to three days to ride.

The Milford Track

The site of some of the most popular walking holidays, New Zealand's Fiordland National Park is considered by many to be home to the finest walk in the world. People travel across the planet to see the national park. The route begins at Lake Te Anau and heads all the way down to Milford Sound. Visitors also get the joy of a trip in a boat at either end of the trip, adding another element to this stunning trip.
