Using Vacations As Preventive Medicine for Stress

What Causes Stress

Stress is your body's physical way of responding to "any" kind of demand, and can be caused by positive or negative events. Stress is not always bad, however, must be managed to avoid health risk. Scheduled vacations, is one way to help manage stress.

If and when you perceive a threat to yourself or your immediate environment, your nervous system responds by releasing stress hormones into the body. Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, your blood press rises and your mind becomes sharper. You then make a decision as to how you will handle the situation which is threatening you.

If this elevated status of your body remains at peak, for a long period of time, you could be headed for a stress related outcome, which can include migraine headaches, muscle tension, high blood pressure, insomnia and ulcers, just to name a few. Many people have trouble breaking the habit of stress, after it has become a part of their everyday life. The first step to gaining control over your stress is to visit your medical doctor. The second step, based upon what your doctor tells you, is to schedule a vacation.

Using a Vacation, As Preventive Medicine

Travel fits right in at the top for relieving symptoms of stress.

A vacation can immediately put a stop to damaging and stressful habits that we place on ourselves due to everyday life. However please note, a vacation is NOT an alternative to seeing your doctor and having the necessary test preformed, to determine the damage, if any to your body, due to long periods of stress. A vacation will help you avoid long-term stress and remind your body to relax.

A vacation, which is not well planned, or which causes stress within itself, may not a better solution, but an added stress. So instead of reducing your stress level, you just add to it, with a different kind of stress. This is when a travel specialist can help you plan a stress free vacation.

It is important to remember, that if you are taking a vacation because your stress level is high, than a group tour may not be the best vacation choice. Travelers who have high stress usually will need a couple days just to do "nothing." Of course, once you have traveled half way around the world, to an exotic destination, your mind tells you that you must get out and see the sights, ride the banana boat, take the glass bottom boat ride, go shopping and tour the city. It may be a good idea to provide yourself, with two or three days, to rebuild your energy, before joining the tourists.

Many people take a cruise in order to force themselves to relax. Once you board the ship and get lost finding your cabin (and of course the emergency drill) you can just lay by the pool or on your balcony for a couple days until the ship docks at the first destination. Be sure to opt for the 'dine at any time option' or use the buffet for the first couple days of the cruise. That way you can eat when your body and your mind both agree on a time. Of course, if you have a fear of cruising than this would only increase your stress level and a beach front resort, in a warm climate, might be your best choice.
