When it comes to active holidays in Latin America, Brazil is one destination you're already likely to be thinking of visiting, partially due to its exotic weather and beautiful scenery. However, as it's the largest country in the continent of South America, you might find it hard to decide where to go. By heading to the wonderful state of Bahia though and you can rest assured of having an amazing time.
Indeed, as the region - which lies on the north-eastern shore of the country - encompasses a wide array of terrain, it is the perfect place for outdoor enthusiasts to explore. Making your way to the Chapada Diamantina National Park will certainly give you the opportunity to have a go at an abundance of adventurous activities, including snorkelling and hiking.
The latter is a particularly popular pastime for many visitors, with the trek up to the summit of the Cachoeira da Fumaca waterfall offering you a glimpse into some of the region's most spectacular landscapes. Set off from the pretty village of Vale do Capao and, once you reach the top, you can stand over the precipice to watch the water cascade down into the lake below, before soaking up the amazing mountain scenery that surrounds you.
If you've got a real head for heights, it's also worth climbing some of the table-top mountains that the park is famous for. One of the most well known is Morro de Pai Inacio, which stands 1,240 m above sea level. Although there are some difficult sections to navigate, the peak can usually be climbed in about 15 minutes and you'll be rewarded with wonderful views in all directions upon reaching the summit.
While vast swathes of the reserve remain in their natural state, visiting the Chapada Diamantina National Park also gives you the opportunity to explore the bustling town of Andarai. Each Monday it hosts a thriving market where you can pick up locally-made souvenirs, although you might find the settlement's history as being a hub for diamond mining to be even more fascinating. Indeed, you will have the chance to see aqueducts and evidence of dynamite blasts used to excavate the precious stones while you explore the region.
If you are keen to get back to nature though, head just outside of the town's limits where you will find the beautiful River Garapa. Alternatively, you could visit the Poco Azul, an underground cave that contains a tranquil pool you can bathe in, or the Bocorio waterfall that is also open to swimmers.
You can also paddle in wonderfully clear waters along the shore of Boipeba, an island that lies just off the mainland of Bahia. In addition to being a great place for swimming, you can also have a go at snorkelling and canoeing here, although if you prefer to stay on dry land you could always hike through the rainforest or saddle up and ride a horse along the beach.
However, if you want to take a breather from exciting activities, you could just lie back on one of Boipeba's numerous golden beaches to relax and soak up the sunshine. As you do so, you can watch local fishermen reel in their catches as well as see people practising capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that infuses elements of dance and music.
The Brazilian state of Bahia is the perfect destination for active holidays in Latin America, as here you can explore the wonderful Chapada Diamantina National Park and the pretty island of Boipeba. Come to Pura Aventura today to start planning the active break of a lifetime.
