However, nowadays it takes the second place after the accomplishment of Syncrude Tailings Dam in Canada (Fort McMurray, Alberta), which facilitates 540 million of cubic meters of water.
2. The highest dam in the world was constructed in Tajikistan, on the Vakhsh River. Nurak Dam reaches the height of 330 meters above sea level. Its record has been preserved for a long period of time notwithstanding it could have been outranged by another dam on this river of 335 meters - its construction was frozen as the USSR fell apart.
3. The highest concrete dam is built in Switzerland - Grand Dixence on the Dixence River. It was built between in the period 1953-1961. Its height is 285 m, crest length - 700 meters.
4. The largest coastal dam is Oostersheldedam, storm barrier in the south-west of the Netherlands. It consists of 65 concrete breakwaters and 62 steel gates, and the total of its length is 9 km.
5. Mississippi River is, probably, the record water basin in the context of quantity of dams. It has the biggest number of these technological objects, which start from Girardeau cape and end up on the coast of Mexican Gulf - they stretch for 2787 km.
6. Two Flevoland polders - East and South - form a continuous land area and are connected with the rest of the Netherlands with the help of dams, bridges and embankments. Together, these polders can be considered as one artificial island, forming a new Dutch province - Eastern Flevoland. Moreover, it includes an additional 2 fairly large new cities - Dronten and Almere, and the population of the province in 1995 amounted to 262 thousand persons. On this artificial island major industrial facilities and resorts are situated, not to mention agricultural as, which was arranged initially here.
7. The longest dam is constructed in Paraguay: Yakireta Dam has length of 69,6 km. It is located on the Argentinian-Paraguayan border on the Parana River. There is also Ciudad Del Este City nearby, the shopping capital of Paraguay, which proclaimed free of tariffs trade on its area. It is also connected by Friendship Bridge with Brazil, which alongside linkage to Argentine makes it the region of three borders. Therefore, this city and the dam area encourage the growth of trade, export and import operations, and industrial transport in Ciudad Del Este (Paraguay). Moreover, the biggest dam - Itapua - is also placed in Ciudad Del Este neighborhood.
