Kakadu National Park is a huge protected area in the northern part of the country. It is by far Australia's largest national park. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. This is a bit of a surprise given how remote it is but once you see the park you will understand why people are willing to travel such a long distance to get there.
Kakadu National Park houses some of the true natural wonders of Australia. It has a variety of different landscapes from cliffs and rock formations to wetlands. It is also home to a huge variety of wildlife. If you want to have the chance to see the Australia's unique wildlife Kakadu is the place to go, there is a huge variety. Actually running into a crocodile may not be most people's idea of fun but it is not something that you need to worry too much about. The park rangers make sure that visitors stay out of areas where there might be a danger.
The other big attraction of Kakadu is that it is the traditional home of the aborigines. It gives visitors a chance to see their history and learn about their culture. The UN has made the park a World Heritage Site because of this history. Unlike other traditional aboriginal sites like Uluru where the tourists have largely forced the aborigines out at Kakadu you will still find them living in the area. They actually own the park and lease it to the government. The towns around the park are largely populated by aborigines and they make up most of the park staff.
Kakadu National Park is located in the middle of nowhere, there are no cities anywhere close to it. The only way to get to the park is by road. There is a bus service but most people find that driving is a better option. The roads are in very good shape so that is not something that you need to worry about but anytime that you drive in remote area of Australia you are going to want to make sure that you are prepared.
The best time to visit Kakadu is during the winter as this is the dry season. Over the summer there will be a lot of rain and although you can visit if you really want to it can be a hassle. That being said if you do visit during the summer you will be able to avoid the large crowds that come during the dry season. In addition the park has a completely different feel during the wet season which can make it an interesting time to visit. In order to really explore the park plan on spending a week, given how long it takes to get their it would be silly to visit for a shorter period anyway.
When it comes to Australia and vacation planning things are not all that complicated, the country is well set up for tourists. The Australia flag carriers are probably your best bet for arranging flights.
