Tips to Travel With Children

Travelling with children has always been seen something that includes special precaution. While the fact is true, a bit of know-how can remove that hassle. This article offers an essential ten-point checklist for parents accompanying young ones on trips:

1 If it is the first trip with children, then you should be ready for a slower pace trip. If more than one place are on list then you might need some extra days. To make the trip enjoyable and stress-free, always carry only essential items instead of over-loading yourself.

2 Always check for special family deals while booking hotels. Many international Hotels offer these. If breakfast isn't included in pricing, ask for 'complimentary' ones for the children. You can also take along snacks on for the first day and buy simple breakfast to eat in your room thereafter.

3 If going abroad, don't be surprised if there is a requirement of visa for children as well. As many countries require visas to be collected in person by applicants, you might need to go to the main embassy in your country.

4 In new places you should always form a meeting point in case any family member gets separated from the group. Especially in crowded places like carnivals, it holds a reward. Always hold the hands of your young ones.

5 If any of your children is on bottles, you should make sure to bring what it needs to make up fresh ones along the way. A good practice is to fill spare bottles with water, then add milk powder and top up with boiling water when you need them.

6 While boarding a bus or train, decide who will go first, who will stow the luggage to make sure nothing and no one gets left behind. Never let kids de-board a train alone as there is gap between coach and platform.

7 Always use children's car seats whenever driving with kids. Go for a universal model which works with all kinds of seatbelts in different cars.

8 Carry some antihistamine such as Piriton, for symptoms such as sneezing, streaming noses or itchy eyes. Similarly hydrocortisone cream can be bought for skin allergies.

9 Children can get more exposure to sunshine or cooler winds than adults if carried in backpacks. Protect them accordingly and have layers to pull on and take off.

10 Local toys are often worth checking out and make great gifts to take home. Apart from being memorable, kids tend to like playing with the same things that local children have and it can help in making friends.

Cremona Hotel Recommendation

The northen Italy town of Cremona is often overlooked by tourists but well worth a visit. Famous for its high-quality violins, Cremona has been a music town since the 16th century and its Civic Museum has a good display dedicated to Stradivarius violins.

Cremona's Cathedral, whose bell tower is the second tallest brick tower in Europe and Europe's oldest surviving tower over 100 meters tall, sits on the picturesque main square. The bell tower houses the world's largest astronomical clock. You can climb to the tower's top for great views.

My friends recently visited Cremona and recommend staying at Albergo Visconti. Although the hotel is outside the historic center, the hotel provides bicycles so you can easily ride to the sights. Cremona is a great town for cycling and you'll fit right in with the locals. My friends also said the hotel breakfast is great.

Views of the Italian Riviera Above Rapallo

Rapallo is one of my favorite places on the Italian Riviera because of the funicular that carries you high above the coast. After a walk around the pedestrian area and along the coast, where you'll see Rapallo's tiny but picturesque castle in the sea, take the tram up the hill to Monteallegra, where there are spectacular views. Visit the pilgrimage church, Santuario Basilica Nostra Signora di Montallegro, then enjoy a lunch on the terrace of the Casa del Pellegrino Restaurant while gazing at the sea far below. If you feel like walking, there's a hiking trail at the top or you can walk back down to Rapallo. You can also have a swim in the sea when you return.

For a look at one of our rides up the tram, see Above Rapallo Video and take a look at the town itself with our Rapallo Pictures.

Luxury Travel in Peru - Insiders Tips on Everything You Need to Know

In 1911 when Hiram Bingham revealed a lost Incan citadel to the world, Peru emerged as a new destination for travel in South America. The citadel was called Machu Picchu, and for many years the largely untouched Inca site lay dormant, lost to the Amazon Jungle until Hiram Bingham stumbled on the site with his expedition team. Over the next 100 years many other Inca sites were reclaimed from the Jungle including the citadel of Choquequirao and Winay Winya. In addition to these incredible sites, visitors to Peru can also enjoy the Inca sites of Pisac, Ollantaytambo and the Colonial City of Cusco - which is like a living museum of Inca architecture.

If you are thinking about a luxury Peru tour in the coming year and are considering taking advantage of some of Peru's best hospitality, we have put together a list of some of the best highlights, and tops on things you need to know.

Peru offers a plethora of luxury Hotels, from traditional colonial hotels to chic contemporary styled boutique accommodations. The very best hotels are located close to the major tourist attractions like Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Sacred Valley. In Cusco we suggest you might want to consider the Monasterio Hotel, originally built in 1595 on the site of the palace of Inca Amaru Qhala. Another popular choice is the very private hotel of La Casona - an 11 suite hotel built around a traditional inner courtyard, and a popular choice for the rich and famous. Other hotels which stand out in Cusco include the well-priced Libertador Hotel and Casa Cartagena, an ultra-modern hotel set in a colonial mansion.

Of-course no luxury trip to Peru is complete without a visit to Machu Picchu, and the very finest way to travel is on the Luxury Hiram Bingham Train. This luxury service operated by the Orient Express Group is one of South Americas finest train journeys. Styled like the 1920's Pullman Trains of the past, with Royal Blue livery and comfortable seating is an experience not to forget. The service includes brunch on the outward journey, a 4-course dinner on the return trip, a fully stocked bar, plus lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge Hotel adjacent to Machu Picchu. It is important to note that the Hiram Bingham Service does not run on a Sunday.

There is only a handful of luxury Machu Picchu Hotels, and the Sanctuary Lodge Hotel is the only hotel located at the citadel, with the rest of the hotels located on the floor of the Vilcabamba Valley in the small town of Aguas Calientes. The Sanctuary Lodge hotel is situated just a few yards from the entrance to Machu Picchu (and interestingly has no views of the citadel), and is perfect for visitors who want to have the best access to the site. An excellent choice for early risers, those who want to visit Machu Picchu before the crowds arrive or budding photographers who want that perfect shot first thing in the morning. An alternative hotel worth considering is the beautiful Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel by the extremely successful luxury Peruvian hotel chain - Inkaterra. Set in 11 acres of cloud forest and featuring the largest private collection of Orchids in South America, on-site nature walks and their own tea and coffee plantations, the Puebo hotel is more than just a place to sleep.

If on your luxury tour to Peru you are hoping to spend a little time relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of the city then a few nights in the Sacred Valley (just 1 hour from Cusco) is a popular choice. The Sacred Valley is a tranquil region of Peru and offers several high level luxury hideaways, and is situated a few hundred feet lower than Cusco, great for acclimatizing to the altitude. There are several excellent choices, but one of the most prominent hotels is the Sol y Luna hotel located just outside of Urubamba. Set in large, beautiful and well maintained gardens, the Sol y Luna hotel offers guests a selection of charming individual Casitas and Luxury Suites. The hotel also features Wayra, a ranch located towards the lower end of the complex, and offers guests exceptionally high quality guided horse-back riding tours through the Sacred Valley. The Sol y Luna also operates half and full day quad biking tours from Wayra, exploring further afield to the mystical and rarely visited Inca ruins of Moray.

If you are considering a luxury Peru tour sometime in the future we hope that these few hints will help you get the most out of your trip. Peru is an amazing country with incredible history, ancient Inca ruins and many other fantastic attractions. Make sure that Peru is on your list of must visit countries - it truly is a luxury destination not to be missed.

How to Get Cheap Tickets to Las Vegas Shows

There are many ways to get cheap tickets to Las Vegas shows but most of them aren't like your usual cheerful stroll in the park.

Shows are unlike groceries or commodities that can be stored and sold at a later date. It is impossible to sell today the empty seat of yesterday's show.

Ticket prices swing back and forth more often than the pendulum of a grandfather clock just before a performance deadline because there is a narrow margin of time to make or lose the most money out of it. A ticket can sell at a steep discount like half the cost or it can sell for 4 to 5 times its regular price from a street scalper. It's pretty much like airline tickets and hotel room prices. Have you ever tried booking a flight on the same day? It can cost you an arm and a leg, right?

There are several ways to buy affordable tickets for Las Vegas shows. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the situation:

1. Buy same-day show tickets at half price at several booth locations spread all over the Las Vegas Strip.

One can get very good deals under such short notice at these locations that have a list of available shows at that time. There are several companies operating these booths on the Strip and downtown. You can find several of them near Circus-circus and near MGM Grand. They typically open at 10AM and close at night but be prepared for long queues. Just ask at your hotel front desk. They will be very familiar with the specific locations.

The best shows naturally tend to sell out early so that most times the tickets available are for shows that are in less demand and are at less convenient times. Federal holidays, vacation season or weekends make it almost impossible to get discounted tickets for the best shows such as Cirque du Soleil. Tickets sell out months in advance and snagging one can be like snagging a prized 1500-pound bluefin tuna.

2. You can also get discounted tickets at the hotel you're staying in.

Since the main business of the hotels in Las Vegas is gaming they tend to give out very attractive prices on hotel stays, restaurants, shows and attractions.

The drawback of this option is that you are limited to the shows in the hotel where you're booked. Hotels under the same parent company umbrella can offer discount tickets to other sister hotels. The two largest hotels chains in Las Vegas are MGM Resorts International (Circus-Circus, Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, The Mirage, etc) and Caesar's Entertainment Inc (Caesar's Palace, Flamingo, Paris, Harrah's etc).

3. You can also opt to buy a package trip.

Bundling your hotel stay with entertainment and airfare can get you a really great deal. You can easily find packages to Las Vegas at the most well known travel sites such as Expedia and Travelocity or with your travel agent.

4. Be on the lookout for coupon booklets, flyers and magazines when you're in Las Vegas.

You will literally be bombarded with offers and discounts starting on your flight to Las Vegas with in-flight magazines, at the airport, taxis or shuttles, at your hotel, at restaurants, attractions and up to the moment you leave Las Vegas. However, don't expect to get great deals on the big blockbusters such as Cirque du Soleil and Le Reve. If you are flexible and can handle uncertainty well you might be able to get great deals.

5. You can also try your luck with online auctions stores like ebay or StubHub, which are two of the most reputable sites.

Some people purchase their tickets from individuals or scalpers at or near the entrance of the show. We don't really recommend this tactic. The major downside of these two last alternatives is that the tickets might turn out to be fakes and ticket-scalping is illegal. So you might end up buying the most expensive tickets of your life and dealing with shady characters at the same time.

6. Our favorite and the best way to get budget-friendly tickets is to plan ahead of time.

You can get great deals and even find plenty of things to do with the family in Las Vegas if you plan early. Make a detailed list of shows that you might be interested in and choose the one that is reasonably priced.

Our best advice: book far in advance so you have maximum flexibility and you can make sure that the shows that you want are available. This is especially true if you are traveling with kids since you don't want to be with them in long queues in the sun. For a relaxing Las Vegas family vacation, plan ahead. We recommend the following helpful steps:

Step 1. Make a list of the shows for kids in Vegas. Read the reviews carefully and other details such as regular pricing then come up with a short list. Rank the shows in order of preference.

Step 2. Determine if the shows on your list will be sold out soon or are already sold out. This is easily done by looking at the availability of the shows for the same day and following weeks. If you are going to Las Vegas during peak periods such as holidays or weekends then your best bet is to get them ahead of time. But if it isn't peak season, you might be able to get discounted tickets at the last minute.

Step 3. Book the tickets online as soon as you can since prices tend to go up as the show performance nears. If you are a regular to Las Vegas you can take the risk and look for last minute tickets.

The last thing you want to happen during your Las Vegas trip is to get stuck with no tickets after spending a few hours in the sun with your kids. Or have tickets but for a show you don't really want to watch. So follow our best advice to plan ahead. This way, you get to relax and watch a Las Vegas show you've always wanted to see.

Ideas For Touring the Benelux

So you fancy going on holiday? But you don't have a huge budget? Mainland Europe is your answer. With the Schengen system and excellent transport links travelling across the continent has never been easier. A great holiday idea is killing three birds with one stone by visiting Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

You might think that's too time-consuming but it doesn't have to be. The easiest way to travel between the three is to take trains. There are Benelux train passes available so enquire online as to what best suits you and your budget. To save time and a repeat journey, fly into one country and fly out from your final stop. Cheap airlines fly to all three destinations. Alternatively, the Eurostar train connects Brussels to London.

Belgium

For some reason many people seem to have the wrong idea about Belgium. But it's a hopping place! Not only is it the centre of European affairs, but it's also home to an incredible amount of sights and attractions.

The cities of Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are all worth a visit if you have time. In Brussels, venture further than the very city centre and Atomium. Have a stroll around the leafy residential areas of Ixelles and Etterbeek to soak up some of the true local atmosphere. Place Chatelain is a neighbourhood square that hosts a weekly market on Wednesdays, and is home to one of the world's best pizzerias - Mama Roma's.

While in Belgium be sure to indulge in some exotic beers. Trappist beers are legendary, and made by monks. Other beers come in flavours like banana, coconut and raspberry.

Antwerp is the country's fashion capital and home to the MoMu museum of fashion. Visit the city for shopping.

Bruges and Ghent are both renowned for their romantic canals. Simply wander along the quaint cobbled streets or hop on a tour boat. Snack on local delicacies - waffles and fries.

For those looking to enjoy nature, head to the French-speaking part of Belgium, specifically the Ardennes area known for its stunning scenery and fresh air.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is another centre of European affairs and so boasts a pleasantly international vibe. The stunning capital city is built across valleys and hills, providing awe-inspiring views. Outside the city Luxembourg is covered in thick green forests, made for exploring on foot or by boat along the country's winding rivers. Moselle Valley is home to vineyards and ancient mountain-top castles. Other areas worth discovering are Echternach and Vianden, both incredibly picturesque and romantic.

Local food is a blend of French and German with favourites being smoked pork in a special sauce, liver meatballs, and a unique cooked cheese.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands is a lively country with friendly locals. Cities worth seeing are Amsterdam, Maastricht, Leiden, Utrecht and The Hague. Here you can visit some of the world's best museums like the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Canal boat tours are common in all canal-based cities, and are truly the best way of seeing the sights. Alternatively, rent a bicycle and act like a local.

Outside the cities, Keukenhof is one of the world's most amazing sights around April and May time. The massive gardens are home to a huge collection of tulips, planted in different formations every year.

The Dutch also enjoy their beer, and snack on excellent cheese like Edam and Gouda.

One of the local delicacies is stamppotje, a potato-based dish.

Set aside at least a week to discover the area. Spend a night at an Amsterdam hotel, venture to Maastricht the next day, then on to Antwerp and Brussels, followed by Bruges. From there on it's just another short journey to Luxembourg. You'll be happy to hear trains are comfortable and spacious.

Japan: Land of the Rising Sun

A 'Western' country, Japan is located in the Far East, in the Pacific ocean, and has China, two Koreas and Russia as the neighboring states. This country and its people have very peculiar features, original culture, rich history and amazing landscapes.

The main feature that the tourists immediately notice in Japan is the carefully looked after natural environment. Any territory, even the smallest strip of land among the skyscrapers, should necessarily be decorated with a tiny lawn. Any pond can be turned into a tiny nature reserve that the residents of the community consider their shrine. Carefully preserved historic monuments and temples are scattered all over the country, and that is why Japan makes an unforgettable impression on everyone, who decides to visit it.

The symbols of the country are the biggest 'holy gate' in Japan called Wooden Door, Itsukushima shrine on the 'sacred' island of Miyajima, standing in the water in a small bay, and the famous beautiful volcano, Mount Fuji, surrounded by picturesque landscapes. Another icon of the country is Seto Ohashi Bridge, erected in the end of the 20th century over the Inland Seto Sea, from Honshu to Shikoku. Many 'pearl farms' in Japan are also interesting as tourist sites visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world and the capital of Japan. It was founded in the middle of the 15th century following the outlook of the ancient Chinese capital Xi'an. This giant metropolis has many old wooden buildings and churches. They interestingly contrast the ultramodern neighborhoods. The center of the city is the Imperial Palace, former Edo Castle, which was constructed in the 15th century and was surrounded by picturesque parks. A lot of tourists also visit the temple of Toshogu Shrine, the Tokyo National Museum, the National Science Museum, the temple of Cannon goddess and many other places. In Tokyo, one will also find a complex of skyscrapers called Three Towers and the largest Harumi Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. Some of the minor, but no less interesting museums include the Museum of Subway, the Museum of Glasses, the Museum of Plumbing, the Museum of Bags etc.

To the northeast of Tokyo, there lies the Nikko National Park, located among picturesque lakes and known for the splendid Kegon and Shirakumo waterfalls and hot springs. The pearl of the resort is the Toshogu Shrine temple complex, which includes 23 monuments of architecture, including the famous pagoda and Yakusido temple. Numerous picturesque bridges are stretched over the waterways, and the most beautiful of them is the "sacred bridge" of Cinque. Mount Nantay is the place of the Buddhist temple Tachi-ki-Kannon and Kazaana caves, known as the caves of the winds.

The second largest city of the country is Yokohama. In the past, it was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes, but today the city amazes with its ultra-modern architecture and the high speed of life. Yokohama is often called the city that never sleeps. Its main attractions are landscaped parks and an outdoor museum, which has gathered samples of traditional wooden buildings, temples and houses from all over the country. Here one will also find the largest and most renowned commercial district of the coutnry, the water park called the Island of Entertainment, and the Maritime Museum. However, it is difficult to stay in Yokohama for a long time because of the strong gas pollution and extremely high density of population.

Nara is the first imperial capital of the country, often visited because of its open-air museum, which houses the most important Buddhist temples and pavilions, pagodas and gardens. Located 70 km from Nara, the famous Horyuji Temple is recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Biwa is located in the central part of Honshu Island, north-east of the former capital of Kyoto. It is often mentioned in Japanese literature, since it lies close to the ancient capital. The lake has three islands, where big cities of Hikone and Otsu are located. Biwa is also known as the paradise for fishing.

How to Secure Your Kids While Travelling: Top 5 Useful Tips That Will Help

It's a fact that your child's safety should be the single most important thing. But do you know that if you constantly look at them while riding, you are putting everyone into great danger?

So, what could be the possible solutions here? You will need focus to keep your driving safe and want to make sure that your child is protected from potential danger at the same time. And to achieve those goals, I have some useful tips to share with you.

Tip #1: Consider asking a friend to take the ride with you

This is one of the best idea you can implement to make sure you can shoot down two birds with only one shot. Your friend will make the ride less boring with social chats. And I believe you will feel much more relaxed with her presence.

Moreover, she can keep an eye on your kid while you focus on riding as well. If she is a good mother, it's even better as she would know what to do to make your kid smile.

Tip #2: Always make sure that you're free of alcohol

Alcohol and caffeine could be detrimental to drivers. They could make you feel sleepy and unfocused. And you know it, it's your duty to make sure that both you and your kid are safe from unwanted car crashes.

That's the reason why you shouldn't take in any alcoholic drinks before driving. They are not good in general not just while driving.

Tip #3: Have some toys for your kids to play

Kids love toys. And it would be better if you let them play with their favorites. So, the very first thing you should do to implement this tip is to identify exactly what kind of toys your kids love to play with. After that, you can give them what they want and focus on your job.

One special note here, you should never give them something small or edgy as they could unintentionally swallow them. It's very dangerous!

Tip #4: Drive slower than normal

Unless you want to increase the risk, you should always take the slower route especially when you have small children going with you.

Driving slowly will help you handle unexpected situations better thus decreasing the potential risk of confronting car crashes. And even if you were about to hit, thanks to slow driving, the damage would be much less significant.

Tip #5: Always equip the best car seat for your kids

It's highly recommended that you equip the best protection system for your smaller children. Although your car might have safety system in place such as seat-belts and locks, you should go one step further to protect your kids with specialized car seats.

There are many brands on the market to choose from and one might be good at this aspect but bad at others. So, it's really important for you to identify the best deals possible. They might be costly at time, but I believe that they are necessary in keeping your child away from danger.

Now if you care, I highly recommend you visit my Britax Car Seat reviews site and take a look at my Britax Marathon-70 Convertible car seat review. I believe my review will help you make better decisions!

The Best Places to Visit in Tanzania

A trip to Africa to visit Tanzania is truly a journey of a lifetime. To make the adventure even more worthwhile, many people are combing their travels with a charitable aspect by participating in a charity challenge. A charity challenge is a way to raise money for a worthy cause whilst providing an unforgettable experience.

There are many charity expeditions available and Tanzania has many popular trips to choose from. Here are some of the more popular "must see" locations if you travel to this popular African region.

The Serengeti National Park is what most people imagine a trip to Africa should look like. The Serengeti is grassland that is home to an abundance of wildlife. It is here that wildebeest and zebras start their annual migration. Whilst day trips are popular, spending time overnight in the park is unforgettable. Another popular activity is a hot air balloon ride over the plains.

Mount Kilimanjaro is popular with adventure travelers and summiting the peak is a real challenge. Many combine a charity aspect to their trip to Kilimanjaro, raising money based on completing the climb. Whilst challenging, this climb requires no special mountaineering equipment; just good fitness and strong mental spirit. The whole expedition takes about 6 days in total.

Zanzibar is another well-known spot, famous for its beaches and rich history of spice trading. Located on the Indian Ocean, the area also boasts the island paradise of Mnemba. The capital of Zanzibar, Stone Town, offers incredible historic sightseeing as well.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the home of the rare black rhinoceros. Animals congregate in the Ngorongoro Crater where the impact zone encloses an abundance of wildlife species. This makes it ideal for photographers and those looking to spot Africa's Big Five.

The Selous is not as famous as the Serengeti, but it is actually the largest reserve in Africa. In addition to the grasslands, the Selous is also famous for its safaris by boat. These trips allow visitors to get up close to the hippos and crocs that roam the rivers and wetlands.

Tarangire National Park is another hidden gem in Tanzania. It is much less crowded than other reserves, however during the dry season it attracts an immense concentration of game, as animals congregate at key watering places. Elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala are all in view.

Kataviis in a very remote area so it is less crowded and the landscape is wild and untamed. Hippos are in abundance during the dry season as they crowd into the small pools of water. The safaris here require a short plan ride and so the cost is a bit higher than others, but the experience is truly unique.

Mafia Island is water paradise with beautiful beaches and marine parks. The diving and snorkeling is truly unique as one can view the giant (but safe) whale shark and ocean turtles. It is also a great spot for deep-sea fishing. For sightseeing, the island has a rich Swahili culture one can explore.

What an adventure it would be to Climb Kilimanjaro and to say you did, and you could even Climb Kilimanjaro for Charity for a real sense of achievement.

So You Are Going On A Family Driving Holiday - Now What?

Going on a driving holiday can be a fun and memorable experience, which is why many families choose to enjoy one year after year. With the bleak financial climate of late, increasing numbers of people are choosing to have a so-called 'staycation', holidaying in their own country instead of venturing abroad.

Organising a busy family and preparing for your driving holiday can be a bit of a nightmare, which is why we have come up with some top tips on driving holiday preparation...

Choose The Perfect Destination

How can you actually find the perfect holiday destination? Perhaps you are already familiar with a certain area or have always longed to see a specific part of the country or world. If you are short on inspiration, ask around - friends, family and colleagues will no doubt be able to provide you with their suggestions for places to go and things to see whilst away. First hand recommendations are always better than taking the word of online reviews, so ask your nearest and dearest for their input where possible.

Failing that, look online. Search the web; look on review sites, forums and travel websites for further ideas and suggestions. The wealth of information available is vast and you will be sure to find several options open to you. Perhaps you will find some potential destinations which you wouldn't have otherwise even considered.

Plan The Route & A Back Up To Boot

Be sure to plan the route in advance (even if you will be relying on a sat nav!), it is always good to be aware of potential stopping places, service stations, scenic lunch spots, toilets etc. prior to setting off. In case of heavy traffic on the day, consider planning a secondary route to serve as an all-important back-up plan should you need it. For the extra prepared folk among you, maybe even plan a third route, just to play it extra safe.

If you will be using a sat nav on the day, be sure to have it fully charged and ready to go. Also carry a trusty map book to be on the safe side. There is no escaping the fact that sometimes, technology can fail us. In which case, a traditional map will have to be depended upon.

Prepare The Car & Check (Or Buy) Breakdown Cover

If you are going to be racking up the mileage on your driving holiday, be sure to get your car serviced as a precautionary measure. There is nothing worse than breaking down far away from home, especially if you have children on board! All the usual vehicle checks should be completed - e.g. tyre pressure, screen wash, oil, coolant, lights and battery. This will help to ensure a smooth and trouble free trip for all concerned. In addition, protect yourselves with breakdown cover. If you already have it, take your membership card and any important cover details with you on the trip, just in case. If you aren't yet covered, shop around using comparison sites or check out leading breakdown providers and purchase your cover ahead of time.

Pack The Car Safely & Effectively

In order to maximise space, many drivers opt to use a car roof rack on their vehicle. If you are going to be using one, ensure that you have the right roof rack accessories to keep the rack safely secured. An unsecure roof rack can be dangerous to yourselves and others on the road, so maximise the stability of the rack with straps, buckles and/or ratchets.

In terms of packing your luggage within the vehicle, all loose items should be secured to ensure that they do not move around the car unexpectedly in case of any sharp braking!

Check Your Children's Seats

Safety is paramount and this is why you should check that all children's car seats are properly installed before you set-off.

Always Be Prepared

When you are going on a long car journey, you can never have enough food or drink. This is especially the case when you have bored children to contend with. Arm yourself with enough nibbles to last the journey, or at least until the first service stop is on the horizon.

Occupy Your Children

Just like adults, children will become restless on long journeys and they are certainly harder at hiding it than us grownups. Whatever you do, don't forget to pack their treasured toys, books, music, gadgets and gaming devices! Also consider taking some travel pillows or cushions, to make sleeping a little more comfortable all round.

Have Fun!

Yes - have fun! Most of all, you want to enjoy your trip. So sit back, relax and take it easy. Complete all of the preparation and by the time the journey begins, you will wonder what you were ever worrying about!

Ron Donnebaum writes on behalf of MotoRack.com, a UK provider of roof racks for cars and vans.

Top Things To See In Kenya

A trip to the African country of Kenya is a dream for many. One cannot help think of the vast Savannahs and incredible wildlife. If you are planning to go, here is what the experts recommend you do not miss.

The Massai Mara: This is what one thinks of when they dream of a trip to Africa. The great migration of wildebeest during the dry season is one of the most amazing spectacles to be seen. The wildlife here includes what is known as the "big five" for animal spotting: buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhinoceros. One will also see various antelope species, zebra, giraffe and hyenas. No trip to Kenya should be without a visit.

Lamu: The island of Lamu has become a backpacker and hikers paradise, but there is plenty to experience in the town of Lamu as well. First settled by the Swahili over 700 year ago, this is one of the older towns in all of Kenya. The town has no motor vehicles so donkeys are the choice for travel, or venture into the sea and take a dhow to explore the island and enjoy the view.

Lake Nakuru National Park: When you see films of the great pink flamingos gliding over the water, you're probably looking at Lake Nakuru. The flamingo population took a dip due to pollution, but is expanding thanks to renewed environmental conscientiousness. One can also catch a look at white rhino, hippo, ostrich, and lion too.

Mount Kenya: This is the second highest peak in Africa and can be climbed and trekked by everyday folk. There is lodging in and around many of the trekking paths as well as huts and campsites. If one is more adventurous a multi-day climb to Point Lenana can be arranged.

Amboseli National Park: This area is also wonderful for spotting animals like elephant, cheetah and leopard. The views of Mount Kilimanjaro are also stunning (Mt. Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania). The park is near the homeland of the Massai and often their cattle can be spotted on the plains.

Lake Turkana: Part of the Kenya lake system, Lake Turkana is also known for its abundance of pink flamingos. It is also home to gigantic Nile crocodile which prowls its shores in search of a meal. It is an alkaline lake in the desert area so the landscape is truly unique. From Baboon Point, one has a breathtaking view of the lake.

Lewa Downs: This is a wildlife conservancy where black rhino and other endangered species like Grevvy's zebra and sitatunga (a type of antelope) are protected. It is a birdwatcher paradise too with over 200 species having been observed. It is here that England's Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton.

Tsavo National Park: This is one of the last wild landscapes tourists can enjoy in Africa. Animal safari here is more adventurous and the habitat makes it more challenging to spot game. The park is actually two parks: Tsavo West and Tsavo East, with the West Park having more tourist-oriented areas, such as an underwater viewing location where you can see elephants take their baths and safely observe hippopotamus and crocodiles.

Watamu: This natural park on the coast features two lagoons which are its main attraction: Turtle Bay and Blue Lagoon. There are many water-oriented activities such as dolphin watching, snorkeling and scuba diving. Another popular thing to do is sale around on Africa's traditional sailboat, the Dhow. The town of Malindi is just north and has wonderful beaches.

North Central Kenya Reserves: The EwasoNgiro River runs through three reserves in the area: Buffalo Springs, Sambura and Shaba which all border each other. The river is the congregation point for the wide variety of animals that live in the parks. Camels are used for safaris and can provide a different view versus that of a traditional safari truck.

South America Travel Tips: Crossing the Chile-Peru Border

For backpackers on the Gringo Trail or for other types of travelers with time enough to cross borders overland (instead of needing the efficiency of air travel), crossing the border between Peru and Chile will be necessary. This route goes overland from the border city of Tacna in Peru to the counterpart city in Arica. These two cities are 32 miles (53 km) apart. Tacna is not frequently a stop for most travelers, but rather a transit point to Arequipa, Puno, or other top travel destinations in Peru. Meanwhile, Arica is somewhat of a burgeoning Chile travel destination, with excellent surfing and a quaint, small town vibe.

Most travelers must face a border crossing from Peru to Chile after having visiting top Peru travel destinations such as Cusco, Machu Picchu, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Puno and Lake Titicaca. With desires to continue adventuring in Chile, travelers will cross the border to destinations such a San Pedro de Atacama and points further south; along the coast, this usually means Iquique, another laidback beach town similar to Arica, followed by Valaparaiso and Santiago, perhaps stopping in La Serena along the way, and the on to Patagonia or over to Argentina via Mendoza.

The first step before these adventures can begin is getting to Tacna. Bus service from Lima, Cusco, and Puno is frequent, with daily departures from these and other cities. Unlike travel from Bolivia or Argentina into Chile, direct international bus service from Peru is difficult to find. However, once in Tacna, getting to the Chile side is fairly easy. Flores, as well as a few other bus companies, offers international bus service across the border. However, a slightly more efficient option is taking a shared cab service, obtainable from the international bus terminal in Tacna - this is adjacent to one of the national bus terminals in the city. (Several buses from Puno arrive to a different national terminal about 7 minutes by taxi from the international terminal.) Cabs are shared between 5 passengers in addition to the driver. The car heads to the border, about 30 km distant. Travelers pass through Peruvian immigration - the agent will take the small white migration card received upon entrance to Peru - and then continue on to Chilean immigration and customs. Throughout this process, whether in a shared car or a bus, all passengers move step by step as a unit.

Once at the Chile border check, once officer will examine passports and clarify the purpose of travel, then all travelers continue to customs, placing all luggage on an x-ray belt to ensure that no plant goods or other prohibited items are being entered. After this process is completed, all passengers will once again board the vehicle and ride the remaining 20 km to the international terminal in Arica. Here, travelers can rest in this laidback beach town with interesting historical and archaeological sites, or continue southward to further adventures.

Danbury CT Historic Homes: Hearthstone Castle

Hearthstone Castle located in Danbury Connecticut's Tarrywile Park was built between 1895 and 1899 by E. Starr Sanford who was a very successful New York City-based portrait photographer and invented one of the first movie cameras. Originally known as "Sanford's Castle," his home is listed in Danbury's National Register of Historic Places.

The castle was originally intended to be the lavish honeymoon home for Sanford's wife. It was designed by the architect Ernest G. W. Dietrich whose drawings of his homes and castles were extensively published in the architectural periodicals of the time.

The three-story turreted structure had seventeen rooms, including nine bedrooms, a library and a billiard room. The rock that was used to build the castle was quarried from the Tarrywile property that today is Tarrywile Park, and transported on a small railroad constructed for this purpose.

All of the wood used in the building of the castle was imported from Italy. In its heyday, the castle was quite a showplace conceived and built by one of the leading image makers of his day, and was also capable of producing its own electricity.

Sanford only lived in his castle home for five years before he sold it in 1902 to industrialist Victor Buck. In 1918 it was sold to Charles Darling Parks, president of the American Hatters and Furriers Co., who bought it for his daughter Irene Parks as a wedding gift. She renamed it Hearthstone Castle after its eight stone fireplaces, and occupied the castle as her home until her death in 1982.

The last residents of the Hearthstone Castle were Richard and Constance Jennings, her heirs who lived there until March 1987 when the entire Tarrywile Estate was sold to the town of Danbury. Today, Tarrywile Park includes Tarrywile Mansion also on the National Register of Historic Places, picnic areas, gardens, orchards, fields, ponds, woods, campsites, footpaths and hiking trails that cover 722 acres of rugged terrain.

Unfortunately, the castle was not able to be well maintained under Danbury's ownership, and the roof collapsed, ceilings have fallen, walls have crumbled and Hearthstone Castle had to be closed to the public due to safety concerns.

It has been said that several hauntings are known to exist on the grounds of the Hearthstone Castle including reports of shadowy figures, glowing mists in the castle's windows, roof and surrounding area. Hikers have reported being pushed and having sticks thrown at them.

The castle's first owner, E. Starr Stanford died an unusual death when the boat he was on was struck by lightning that badly damaged the arteries of his eyes. The man who had built his career as a photographer, camera inventor and image maker never recovered his eyesight and died three years later.

The Tarrywile Park Authority are considering two options for renovating the castle and surrounding real estate. The first option involves developing the Castle into a three season pavilion and observation tower.

The second option includes the complete restoration of the castle and development of a fully functioning building with lodge areas, restaurant, museum, conference rooms, classrooms, staff residence and gift shop. It is hoped the restored castle and grounds would provide a major attraction and gathering place for the city of Danbury and recover a historic castle home on the National Register of Historic Places.

Uncover Poggibonsi's History on a Trip to Tuscany

There are so many fascinating places to visit for history buffs who rent a villa in Tuscany, such as Florence, Siena and Pisa. However, it is worth venturing out to some of the smaller towns and cities to uncover the secrets of their past as well.

A case in point is Poggibonsi, which has a truly fascinating history dating right the way back to the prehistoric Neolithic period. Its position in the heart of the Valdelsa Valley and its role in the Chianti wine production chain only add to its allure.

You can spend hours in the sunshine here wandering around sites like the Fonte delle Fate - fountain of fairies - or the 14th century Convent of San Lucchese, which is home to stunning frescos. Every building here has a story to tell and offers you a glimpse of the town's past.

While, as mentioned previously, the earliest evidence of settlement is prehistoric, civilisation of the area is not thought to have begun until the Roman-Etruscan era. Over the coming decades, Poggibonsi was to grow to much providence, becoming the most important in the valley.

It was given the title of an imperial city by Frederick II and played an incredibly important role in trade, as it sits on what was the Francigena Road - the main road linking Italy and France. To many commentators at the time, it was the most beautiful place in Tuscany.

However, this good fortune was not to last, as the town got caught up in the conflict between the Florentine Guelphs and Ghibellines. Ruled over by the latter, it got in the way of the Guelphs' plans to expand Florence and make it a more dominant power.

As a result, they fought for and conquered the settlement, before destroying it in 1270. Not only that, but they also forbade anyone to attempt to rebuild the shattered town, with the locals forced to return to their native villages.

Some 50 years later, Henry VII ordered Poggibonsi to be rebuilt and it was to be named Monte Imperiale in his honour, although he did not survive to see it completed.

Once the conflict eventually petered out, the town rose to industrial significance in the 19th century and became a key player in the local Chianti wine-producing industry. However, there was more ill fortune on the horizon, with Poggibonsi stricken by dozens of air raids in World War II.

With so many stories to tell, Poggibonsi is just as worth including on your itinerary as any of Tuscany's major cities.

Play On In Wisconsin Dells

If you're among the myriad of parents and families in town for youth sports tournaments, we have a strong hunch you'll be looking for things to do between the games. And boy oh boy, do we have some super recommendations for you!

The Dells is quickly becoming a sports mecca for youth tournaments, events and camps, and the 2012 warm weather season stands to be the best ever, with basketball, softball and volleyball filling up the calendar. For filling down time between games may we suggest some non-competitive activities. Then fill up on good eats to keep those energy levels high.

Between games, coaches typically want players to conserve their energy, so a stop at a Wisconsin Dells restaurant for some nourishment or a little shopping in the Dells would fit the bill. Siblings, on the other hand, can have at it with a visit to an indoor amusement park, an interactive attraction or a trip to one of the indoor Wisconsin Dells water parks.

Start outdoors - the fresh air will do you good - with a Duck tour of the Wisconsin River. If the coach gives the go-ahead, head to a Wisconsin Dells outdoor waterpark like Noah's Art Waterpark, where you can try the new Quadzilla racer slides (remember, no need to be too competitive, as it's primarily intended as adrenaline-inducing fun). Or go from screaming for the team to screaming on a roller coaster.

Balance your time in the sun with some indoor fun.

In Downtown Dells, you'll find Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum, a place loaded with exhibits that are oddly captivating. Next door is Wizard Quest, a full-size labyrinth adventure in which your goal is to find and free the wizards of the realm. For kids with an artistic streak, maybe siblings who are along to cheer on a brother or sister, there's Paint It! Pottery Shop, where they can create their own masterpiece. Wild Fun Zone is the place with the big gorilla on the top of the building and bumper cars, mini golf and laser tag inside.

On the Wisconsin Dells Parkway, there's the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center, with more than 175 interactive exhibits, including a virtual sports center that's sure to be a hit for obvious reasons. Adjacent to Great Wolf Lodge is MagiQuest, a four-story live action adventure game with players using magic wands - score!

After you've worked up an appetite, take the team to one of the two Monk's Bar & Grill restaurants in Wisconsin Dells for a classic burger the locals love. Other player favorites include Pizza Pub, Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., Buffalo Phil's Pizza & Grille, and River Walk Pub.

Go team!

Julia Randles is the Communications Specialist & Events Manager for the Dells at the Wisconsin Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau, and is responsible for promoting Wisconsin Dells "The Waterpark Capital of the World!®" as a premiere national tourism destination for families, meetings and conventions, youth sports and group travel.

Student Group Travel to Philadelphia: A Natural Classroom

Philadelphia's rich history and long list of attractions make the "City of Brotherly Love" a natural classroom for student groups. Made famous for the birthplace of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, Philadelphia is a dynamic student group travel choice for learning about Colonial history and the Revolutionary period. Combine Philadelphia's fascinating historical sites with its world-class museums, exciting attractions, fantastic entertainment, professional sports, signature shopping and delicious food, you then will have a recipe for both an educational and entertaining student tour, one that will touch your groups' hearts and minds. Philadelphia not only retells the powerful stories of our nation's past, but is willing to accommodate and entertain student groups as few other cities can.

Philadelphia's Historical Sites

The historical aspects of Philadelphia are fascinating. Being both an indoor and outdoor museum of history, Philadelphia is famous for its role it played in forming our first republic government. As part of your trip, you and your student group should include the Historical Independence Walking Tour on your itinerary. The 2+ mile guided tour walks you through old city Philadelphia to 11 significant historical sites including:

Independence Hall
Liberty Bell Center
Declaration House
Carpenter's Hall
Supreme Court
Congress Hall
Franklin Court
Elfreth's Alley
Betsy Ross House
Fireman's Hall
Christ Church and Burial Ground

Make sure your student group wears comfortable walking shoes before taking this tour as it is centered in the historical section of Philadelphia where cobblestone streets abound.

If you decide to visit the more popular historical sites without taking the guided walking tour, then the following would meet and/or exceed your educational objectives.

Liberty Bell Center - Having a new home in recent years, the Liberty Bell is now located across the street from Independence Hall. The center is equally powerful and dramatic as the Bell itself. Throughout this expansive and historical center, larger-than-life historic documents and graphic images explore both the facts and myths of the Bell. Tradition tells of a chime that changed the world on July 8, 1776, with the Liberty Bell ringing out from the tower of Independence Hall summoning the citizens of Philadelphia to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon. X-Rays give one an insider's view of the Bell's crack and inner workings. Short historical films trace how abolitionists and other groups adopted the Bell as its symbol of freedom and liberty for all.

Independence Hall - Being the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, Independence Hall is one of the most important historical landmarks in the United States. Major steps towards independence were taken here by delegates of the English colonies, amongst them George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration of Independence was signed in this building on July 4, 1776. Independence Hall was also the site where the American Flag was first unveiled in 1777. In 1781, the Articles of Confederation uniting all thirteen colonies were ratified here as well as the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

National Constitution Center - On July 4, 2003, the City of Philadelphia opened the doors to the National Constitution Center. This captivating center tells the story of the U.S. Constitution by means of more than 100 interactive multimedia exhibits, photographs, sculpture, text, film and artifacts. The Kimmel Theater, a 350 seat star-shaped theater, features "Freedom Rising," a multimedia production combining film, a live actor and video projection on a 360° screen to tell the stirring story of "We the People."

Christ Church and Burial Ground - Christ Church, founded in 1695, is an interesting place to explore Colonial and Revolution-era history. Its burial ground, which includes the tomb of Benjamin Franklin, is an authentic historic site for learning about the lives of early Americans.

Betsy Ross House - The Betsy Ross House is recognized as the place where Betsy Ross lived when she made the first American Flag. Built around 1740, the house is located just blocks from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center.

Old City Hall - Old City Hall was Philadelphia's second city hall and served as the home of the United States First Supreme Court between the years of 1791 and 1800.

Valley Forge National Historical Park - The picturesque, rolling hillsides of 3,600 acre Valley Forge National Historical Park are a peaceful reminder of freedom won by men's sacrifices long ago. It was here that General George Washington forged his Continental Army into a fighting force during the winter encampment of 1777-78.

Overall, Philadelphia provides student groups a fascinating historical education about the beginnings of our first republic government and Colonial history. In addition and not even mentioned in this article are other world-class attractions and museums like the Adventure Aquarium, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Academy of Natural Sciences, Fels Planetarium and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. Unlike any other city, Philadelphia provides student groups with unlimited attractions, museums, historical sites and monuments. As one can see, Philadelphia has it all!

Why Tintagel Makes a Great Base for a Cornwall Holiday

Cornwall is famed as a great location for family breaks, thanks to its beaches, countryside and wide range of attractions. Tintagel is a perfect base to explore this from, as the village on the Atlantic coast is within easy travelling distance of a selection of fascinating destinations.

Opt to stay in a holiday cottage in Tintagel and you will discover there is lots to do just a short walk away. The highlight of a getaway here is a tour of the remains of the castle; legend has it that King Arthur was born in the fortress and that Merlin lived in a cave underneath it.

There are other sites in the village related to the mythical monarch, including King Arthur's Hall. You will also want to see the National Trust-owned Old Post Office, a beautifully-restored medieval yeoman's farmhouse that was briefly a postal centre in Victorian times.

If you take a car with you to Cornwall, you will find a host of other attractions just a short drive from Tintagel. Crealy Great Adventure Park near Wadebridge is a fun day out for families with children, as it has a petting zoo, indoor and outdoor adventure playgrounds and terrifying rides, such as The Beast and Morgawr.

A day trip to Boscastle is another good choice, as it is one of the prettiest villages in the county and there is lots to discover outdoors. The National Trust owns most of the land here and has placed paths across it, so it is easy to explore the area.

Take a stroll up to Penally Point cliffs to enjoy the views and follow the trail through Forrabury Stitches, a rare example of a well preserved celtic strip field system. If the weather is not good during your time in Boscastle, you could visit the Museum of Witchcraft to see its collection of magic-themed artefacts.

Every holiday should include a treat and in Cornwall that means a trip to Padstow. The town has some beautiful beaches ideal for long walks and is also where you will find Prideaux Place, a magnificent Elizabethan manor house and gardens.

After seeing them, reward yourself with a meal at one of the eateries owned by television chef Rick Stein. He has four in Padstow, including one of the UK's best fish and chip shops, a stylish bistro and the upmarket The Seafood Restaurant, where his team transform the local catch into sumptuous gourmet dishes.

Travel Indonesia: Jakarta, Sumatra and More

Read about the beauties and attractions of Indonesia, a country in South-East Asia, between two oceans. This country promises great experiences to people who are interested in exploring diverse landscapes and cultures.

Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia. The country is washed by the Pacific and the Indian Ocean and includes more than 13,600 islands. The nature of the archipelago is characterized by tropical rainforests, majestic volcanoes and lagoons. Unique culture, national parks, nature reserves, and excellent resorts with lots of opportunities for rest make Indonesia a popular place for many travelers.

Jakarta is the capital and the largest city of Indonesia. Jakarta is situated on the northwest coast of Java and is known as the city with an original mixture of numerous buildings of the 17th-18th centuries, canals and multiple 'national' neighborhoods, each with a unique style. A paved area near Taman Kota Fatah, surrounded by old buildings overlooking the canal, is one of the centers of Batavia, the old part of the city which is often visited by organized groups of tourists. Nearby, the tourists will see the Jakarta History Museum in the former City Hall, an ancient gun as the symbol of an entire epoch, the Doll Museum, Chicken Market drawbridge erected in the 17th century, and the Bahari Museum with a lookout tower. Some more extravagant attractions of the capital include Sunda Kelapa, the old port, and the oldest temple of the city, Tszine-Yuan.

The second most recognized tourist area is Medan Merdeka, known as Freedom Square, with a 132-meter National Monument. Nearby one can find the National Museum of Indonesia with unique historical and ethnological collections, the Museum of National History and of Indonesian Culture. Of special interest is the impressive building of the presidential palace, the Maritime Museum and Villelme church. Colonial past is perceived in the architecture of the Portuguese Church. One of the largest religious mosques in Southeast Asia is Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. Shopping is offered in the bustling Mangadau shopping center and Glodok Bazaar. Cutting-edge business districts, architecture of all styles, the famous zoo, water parks, cultural and entertainment complexes and the largest and most popular park in Jakarta, Jaya Ancol, contribute to the general tourist impression of the city.

Yogyakarta attracts the attention of tourists due to a huge palace complex of Sultan's Kraton, numerous museums, and the exquisite temple complex Lara Jonggrang in the nearby Prambanane region. In the area of Surabaya, the capital of East Java, one will find the attractive temples of Malang district and Mount Bromo. In the south of the island, there is a sample of medieval Indonesian art, the 'Temple of a Thousand Buddhas' built in the 8th-9th centuries.

Bali Island is the most developed tourist area of Indonesia. Denpasar, the capital and the administrative center of the island, is a surprisingly quiet city filled with aromas of plants and unusual fresh air. Many small buildings of traditional architecture, quiet cozy streets, and the constantly shining sun give the city a special charm. Nearby, there is the international Ngurah Rai airport, the main transport hub of the island. 'The Island of the Gods' itself attracts tourists with its pristine landscapes, tropical rainforests and majestic volcanoes, blue lagoons and lush tropical jungle. As for mam-made attractions, one can mention temples and superb resorts. Bali is famous for the tolerant attitude of the local people towards the lifestyle of foreigners, so it surely makes this island a perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

Sumatra is often associated with intense volcanic activity, hundreds of miles of beaches with dark sand and dozens of pristine mountain lakes. However, the region is also known for its turbulent historical past evidenced by the ruins of ancient temples and palaces. The most interesting places include Parapat luxury resort on the shores of the magnificent volcanic Lake Toba, the royal palace and the tombs of Samosir island, mosques, museums, a crocodile farm near Medan, and an orangutan rehabilitation center. In the northern part of Sumatra, one will find the largest reserve of the country, Gunung Leuser, where rare species of Sumatran rhinoceros, tigers, wild bulls and orangutans are preserved.

To design a trip to Indonesia, you can contact one of the Indonesian travel agents or Indonesian tour operators. They will help you prepare a tour with least effort and make your trip a great experience.
